Microsoft Commerce Server 2009 R2 provides developers a highly extensible Commerce Foundation that they can customize by modifying or overriding default Commerce Server 2009 R2 commerce entities and operation sequences, or by creating new features without having to alter of redeploy the assemblies. Developers can replace the default implementation of the operations with no changes to the Commerce Server 2009 R2 Web services. As a developer, you can introduce new operations into the service. For development about extending the Commerce Foundation, see Developing with the Multi-Channel Commerce Foundation.
Commerce Server 2009 R2 delivers a rich set of developer kits that provide Web application developers with source code and samples that they can use as a starting point to facilitate the development of custom ASP.NET or SharePoint 2010 e-commerce solutions. Commerce Server 2009 R2 provides the following kits that can be used with Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 or Microsoft Visual Studio 2010:
The SharePoint Commerce Extensibility Kit - This kit provides the source code for the SharePoint 2010 Web parts and the Solution Storefront. Developers can use this kit as a starting point to customize Web parts or to build their own SharePoint 2010 solution
The Desktop Business Tools Extensibility Kit - This kit provides the source code that allows developers to customize the Desktop Business Tools (including the Catalog and Inventory Schema Manager, Catalog Manager, Customer and Orders Manager and Marketing Manager) to meet the specific requirements of business management users.
The Web Business Tools Extensibility Kit - This kit provides the source code that allows developers to customize the Silverlight-based Web Business Tools provided by the Commerce Server Business Administration Ribbon available in the Solution Storefront.
In addition to the developer kits listed above, Solution Storefront leverages technologies such as XSL-based transforms for dynamic page displays, provides SharePoint 2010 designers the ability to perform site customization without the need for a Visual Studio environment.
