CESH Startup Server

The CESH startup server uses the Windows CE Debug Shell tool to download and launch a file on a target device. For more information about this tool, see Windows CE Console Debug Shell Tool.

To configure the CESH startup server, you must specify the location of the release directory for your platform. For information about obtaining the path of the release directory, see Obtaining the Path of the Release Directory for a Platform.

By default, the CESH startup server uses the directory containing the last OS image loaded by Platform Builder as the release directory. After you establish a Platform Manager connection to a target device, the target device recognizes the release directory on the development workstation as a virtual file system for the target device. Any file in the release directory is visible to the target device. If you use the CESH startup server to copy a file to a specific directory on the target device, the startup server also copies the file to the release directory on the development workstation.

To connect to a target device with the CESH startup server, you must enable KITL on the target device. For information about KITL, see Kernel Independent Transport Layer.

Note   To use the CESH startup server, you must have a copy of the Shell.exe file in the release directory for the platform. If you enabled KITL on the target device and you cannot connect to the target device with the CESH startup server, the Shell.exe file may be missing from the release directory. You may be able to establish a connection by copying the Shell.exe file to the release directory and then connecting to the target device.
