Office Communications Server supports both software and hardware clients. Feature availability to individual users depends on which server roles are deployed, how the administrator configures user accounts, and which client and/or operating system is running on the user's computer.
Microsoft® Exchange Server 2007 with Service Pack 1 Unified Messaging is required to integrate Office Communications Server with the voice and e-mail features of Exchange Server.
Software Clients
Office Communications Server 2007 R2 supports the following software clients.
Microsoft Office Communicator
Microsoft® Office Communicator 2007 R2 is the recommended Unified Communications client for Office Communications Server. This client supports placing and receiving calls, enhanced presence, IM, and multimodal conferencing features.
For both internal and remote clients, the CA certificate chain for the Office Communications Server 2007 deployment must be downloaded and installed to the certificate store of the client computer.
Tip
The root certificates for many popular CAs are included with the client installation.
Supported Versions
Office Communications Server 2007 R2 supports the following versions of Office Communicator:
- Office Communicator 2007 R2
- Office Communicator 2007
- Office Communicator 2005 (only through federation)
Remote Desktop Support
Office Communicator 2007 and Office Communicator 2007 R2 support Microsoft Terminal Services and Citrix Metaframe only when used for text chats and presence.
Communicator Web Access Client
When Communicator Web Access is deployed, users can use a Web browser to access the presence, IM, and conferencing features of Office Communications Server without installing a desktop client or connecting through a VPN.
For both internal and remote clients, the CA certificate chain for the Office Communications Server deployment must be downloaded and installed to the certificate store of the client computer.

Microsoft Office Live Meeting Client
The Microsoft Office Live Meeting client is the data collaboration and audio/video client for both Office Communications Server and the hosted Microsoft Live Meeting service.

Office Communications Server 2007 R2 supports the following versions of the Office Live Meeting client for Web conferencing:
- Office Live Meeting 2007
Remote Desktop Support
Microsoft Office Live Meeting 2007 is not optimized for use with terminal services. Features and functionality are not supported when used in a remote desktop environment.
Microsoft Outlook Add-in
The Microsoft Outlook Add-in is the conference scheduling client for Office Communications Server.
Supported Versions
Office Communications Server 2007 R2 supports the following versions of the Microsoft Outlook Add-in:
- Microsoft Outlook 2007 with the latest Service Pack
- Microsoft Outlook 2007
Microsoft Office Communicator Mobile
Microsoft® Office Communicator Mobile is a unified communications client that runs on Microsoft® Windows Mobile® 6.0 or Windows Mobile® 6.1 software for Pocket PC and Smartphone devices. Communicator Mobile integrates instant messaging (IM), presence, and telephony.
To perform authentication, Communicator Mobile 2007 R2 requires that the root certificate that is part of the server certificate is installed on the device. By default, Windows Mobile-powered devices are shipped with a variety of certificates. If your organization uses a public CA, the root certificate may already be installed on your users' mobile devices. Supported Versions
Office Communications Server 2007 R2 supports only the 2007 R2 version of Microsoft Office Communicator Mobile. If you are using an earlier version of Communicator Mobile, you must upgrade to the 2007 R2 version.
Group Chat Console
Group Chat Console is the group chat client that is used to post and access channel content, including files, links, and text, as well as to exchange instant messages between two users.
Supported Versions
Release 2007 R2 is the first release of Group Chat Console.
Microsoft Office Communicator Mobile for Java
Microsoft Office Communicator Mobile for Java is used on mobile devices that run Java Mobile Edition software, such as feature phones and Blackberries. Communicator Mobile for Java provides Contact list, presence, IM, corporate directory search, incoming and outgoing circuit voice call control, and voice mail and messaging functionality.
To perform authentication, Communicator Mobile for Java requires that the root certificate that is part of the server certificate is installed on the device. If your organization uses a public CA, the root certificate may already be installed on your users' mobile devices.

Hardware Clients
Office Communications Server supports the following hardware clients:
- Office Communicator 2007 Phone Edition, which supports placing and receiving calls, enhanced presence, SIP signaling, and a user experience similar to that of Office Communicator.
- Microsoft RoundTable, which is an advanced conferencing device that provides a 360-degree view of the conference room, wideband audio, and video that tracks the flow of conversation among multiple speakers.
