Accessing Project Web App and Project Professional from a Macintosh-based computer

Applies to: Project Server 2010, Project Professional 2010

Topic Last Modified: 2012-09-17

Although Project Professional and full access to Microsoft Project Web App are not supported in a Macintosh operating environment, Microsoft suggests two options for those who want to fully access Project Web App or use the Microsoft Project Professional client.

  • The first option is to install a Microsoft Project–compatible Windows operating system on your Apple computer that is using a genuine copy of Windows and Apple's Boot Camp software. Boot Camp is software included with Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard that lets you run compatible versions of Microsoft Windows on an Intel-based Mac. More information about Boot Camp can be found at http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/ site.

  • The second supported option, which works on both Intel– and PowerPC–based Apple computers, is to download the free Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac. It enables you to connect your Macintosh computer to a Windows-based computer or to multiple Windows-based computers. Once the computers are connected, you can use Windows Internet Explorer on the remote computer to connect to a Project Web App site, or you can use a local client copy of Project Professional 2010 (if it is installed). The download for Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac can be found at https://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.

Access to Project Web App team member pages through Apple Safari 5 by using the Project Server 2010 Service Pack 1 update

The Project Server 2010 Service Pack 1 update provides support for the Apple Safari 5 browser for Mac OS x v10.6 users to access Project Web App pages that are most frequently used by team members. These pages include:

  • Project Web App main default page (default.aspx)

  • All pages in the “My Work” section in the Quick Launch. This includes the following:

    • Tasks

    • Timesheets

    • Issues and Risks

Important

Although the Project Server 2010 Service Pack 1 update will allow access to these pages through the Apple Safari 5 browser, it is important to note that it will not allow you access to all pages in Project Web App. If you need access to all PWA pages in a Macintosh operating environment, use one of the two options listed in the previous section.

The Project Server 2010 Service Pack 1 update is applied to your Project Server 2010 Server environment, and must be applied to all Web Front End and Application server in your Project Server 2010 farm.
