When you delete a subsite, the subsite contained under a site collection is deleted without affecting the site collection or other subsites that exist under the same site collection. You cannot delete a subsite if it contains other subsites.

When you delete a subsite from a site collection, you permanently destroy all content and user information of the site, including the following:

  • Documents and document libraries

  • Lists and list data, including surveys, discussions, announcements, and calendar information

  • Subsite settings and configurations

  • Permission levels and security information related to the subsite

  • Groups created within the subsite

We recommend that you back up before you delete a subsite. For more information, see Plan for backup and recovery (Office SharePoint Server).

Membership in the Site Administrators SharePoint group, or equivalent, is the minimum required to complete this procedure.
