Configure the Recycle Bin (Office SharePoint Server 2007)

Before you perform this procedure, confirm that your system is running Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007.

The Recycle Bin provides a safety net when deleting documents, list items, lists, folders and files from Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 or from one of the server products in the 2007 Office release. When you or site visitors delete any of these items from a Web site, the items are placed in the Recycle Bin. The Recycle Bin provides two stages of backup protection. Farm administrators can configure these features and site collection administrators can view, restore, or delete items in the Recycle Bin.


Membership in the Office SharePoint Server 2007 Farm Administrators group is the minimum required to complete this procedure.

Configure the Recycle Bin

When Office SharePoint Server 2007 is installed or a new Web application is created, the following default Recycle Bin settings are configured:

  • The Recycle Bin is turned on.

  • Items are scheduled to be deleted from the Recycle Bin after 30 days.

  • The second-stage Recycle Bin is set to add 50 percent of live site quota for second-stage deleted items.

If you are satisfied with these settings, no further action is required. If you want to change these settings, use the following procedure.

Configure the Recycle Bin

  1. On the SharePoint Central Administration Web site, on the Application Management tab, in the SharePoint Web Application Management section, click Web application general settings.

  2. On the Web Application General Settings page, in the Web Application section, choose the Web application that you want to configure from the drop-down list.

  3. On the Web Application General Settings page, in the Recycle Bin section, there are three separate settings that you can configure:

    1. Select On or Off to set the Recycle Bin status. If you choose to turn the Recycle Bin off, the other two options become unavailable.

    2. Select After and type the number of days that you want to retain items in your Recycle Bin or select Never if you do not want items to ever be deleted from the Recycle Bin.

    3. Select Add and type a percentage of live site quota for second-stage deleted items or select Off to disable the second-stage Recycle Bin.

  4. Click OK.
