Problem   The DNS forwarders cannot be removed.

Solution   Domain Name System (DNS) uses forwarders to resolve names that the local DNS server cannot. Typically DNS forwarders are configured to forward DNS queries to the Internet service provider’s (ISP) DNS server or to the public DNS server that resolves domain names to IP addresses. With Windows SBS 2011 Standard, it is recommended that you use root hints rather than DNS forwarders for DNS requests. Root hint servers are DNS servers that resolve root domain names and that are both globally accessible and public. Root hints help prevent problems that may occur as a result of DNS poisoning on the local ISP server or of changing a DNS server. Because DNS resolution can be slightly quicker with DNS forwarders, you may choose to keep your DNS forwarders.

To manually remove the DNS forwarders

  1. Click Start, click Administrative Tools, and then click DNS.

  2. Click Continue in the User Account Control dialog box.

  3. In the DNS Manager navigation pane, right-click the server name, and then click Properties.

  4. On the Properties page, click the Forwarders tab.

  5. Delete all servers that are listed, click OK, and then close DNS Manager.
