Introducing DPM

Published : April 8, 2005 | Updated : August 17, 2005

Microsoft® System Center Data Protection Manager (DPM) is a server software application that enables disk-based data protection and recovery for file servers in an Active Directory® domain. DPM performs replication, synchronization, and shadow copy creation to provide reliable protection and rapid recovery of data by both system administrators and end users. DPM can be integrated with existing tape-based backup and recovery software to enable long-term archiving of data from the DPM server without affecting the performance of protected file servers.

Designed to run on servers running either the Microsoft® Windows Server™ 2003 or the Windows® Storage Server 2003 operating system, DPM uses replication, the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) infrastructure, and a rich, policy-driven engine to provide businesses of all sizes with nearly continuous protection and rapid, reliable data recovery.

DPM is designed to protect up to 6 terabytes of data, from as many as 30 file servers, on a single DPM server. The file servers can be running the Windows Server 2003, Windows Storage Server 2003, or Windows 2000 Server operating system.
