New Installation of VMM

Applies To: Virtual Machine Manager 2008, Virtual Machine Manager 2008 R2, Virtual Machine Manager 2008 R2 SP1

The topics in this section provide step-by-step instructions for a new installation of the Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) 2008 or VMM 2008 R2 components. You can use the information in this section to install all VMM components on a single computer or to install each VMM component on separate computers. For more information, see Planning and Architecture (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=130607).

Before you begin the installation of the VMM components:

  1. Ensure that all computers meet at least the minimum hardware requirements and that all prerequisite software is installed. For more information about hardware and software requirements, see VMM System Requirements.

  2. It is highly recommended that you run the Virtual Machine Manager Configuration Analyzer (VMMCA) for each computer on which you want to install a VMM component. VMMCA is a diagnostic tool that verifies configuration settings for your computer that are important to running VMM. You can download the VMMCA for VMM 2008 R2 at System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 Configuration Analyzer Update 1 (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=125654).

    Note

To scan a remote computer, ensure that a firewall on the remote computer is not blocking Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) communication or the service control manager (SCM), known as Remote Service Management in the Windows Vista operating system, and that the WMI service is running on the remote computer.

Important

After you have finished installing the VMM components, there are additional tasks required to make VMM fully functional and optional configuration tasks depending on how you implement VMM in your environment.
