Using Office 97 System Policies
List of Office 97 System Policies
This appendix describes how to use Windows system policies to modify registry settings used by Microsoft Office 97 for Windows applications. With system policies, you can modify registry settings for a large number of users on a network simultaneously. For an overview of Windows system policies and an explanation of how to use the System Policy Editor, see "Using Windows System Policies to Customize Office," in Chapter 7, "Customizing and Optimizing Microsoft Office."
Note Windows system policies are supported by Windows 95 and Windows NT Workstation version 4.0 only. Office applications store information in the Windows NT Workstation version 3.51 registry in the same way as in Windows 95 and Windows NT Workstation 4.0, but you cannot use system policies to change these settings. The Macintosh operating system does not support system policies.
Installing the System Policy Editor

The Office Resource Kit Tools and Utilities CD includes several policy templates for Office 97. You must install these templates on your system before using them to create system policy files. The following procedure installs the System Policy Editor in your Windows folder, and the Office policy templates in the Windows\Inf subfolder.
To install the System Policy Editor and Office policy templates from the Tools and Utilities CD
In Control Panel, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
Click the Windows Setup tab.
Click Have Disk.
In the Copy manufacturer's files from box, enter drive**:\Policy,** where drive is the drive letter for the Tools and Utilities CD, and then click OK.
Under Components, select the System Policy Editor check box to install the System Policy Editor program (Poledit.exe) and related files.
Select the Office 97 Templates for Windows 95 check box to install the Office templates for Windows 95.

Select the Office 97 Templates for Windows NT 4.0 check box to install the Office templates for Windows NT Workstation 4.0.
Click Install.

The first time you run the System Policy Editor, it loads the Office 97 template files that you installed.
To start the System Policy Editor
On the Start menu, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then point to System Tools.
Click System Policy Editor.
In Windows Explorer, you can also double-click Poledit.exe in the Windows folder to start the System Policy Editor.
Note To create a system policy file for a computer running Windows 95, you must run the System Policy Editor under Windows 95. To create a system policy file for Windows NT Workstation 4.0, you must run the System Policy Editor under Windows NT Workstation 4.0 or Windows NT Server 4.0.
To verify that the template files are loaded in the System Policy Editor, click Policy Template on the System Policy Editor Options menu. The template files currently loaded are listed in the Current Policy Template(s) box, as shown in the following table.

Note The System Policy Editor includes three Windows template files (Common.adm, Windows.adm, and Winnt.adm). These files do not contain Office policies, but the Windows policies they contain may be useful in managing a workgroup. For more information, see the Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 Resource Kit and Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0 Resource Kit.
Using Office 97 System Policies
The Office 97 policy template files contain system policies that you can use to customize Office applications for your users across a network. This section describes selected system policies that may be of special interest to administrators deploying and maintaining Office 97 in a workgroup or large organization. For the complete list of Office system policies, see "List of Office 97 System Policies" later in this chapter.
Computer Settings
Computer setting policies apply to all users who log on to one computer. If you make the setting to the Default Computer icon, the setting applies to all computers on which these policies are loaded. If you create a new computer icon using the Add Computer command (Edit menu), then the settings apply only to that computer.
You can view and set computer policies in the System Policy Editor by double-clicking the Default Computer icon or, if you have added a new computer, by double-clicking the new computer icon.
Office 97 Policies
The following computer setting policies appear in the Office 97 group in the System Policy Editor.
Computer\Office 97\Default Save
This policy sets the prompt text that the Assistant uses when default save is enabled and the user clicks the Save As command (File menu). The default text is "Other people may not have the latest version of Office, so if you plan to share this file, you should save it in the following format: format."
Computer\Office 97\Uninstall
This policy is associated with the registry value HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SOFTWARE \Microsoft \Windows \CurrentVersion \Uninstall \Office8.0\UninstallString. The default value points to the local version of Office Setup and gives it a parameter to find the installed Setup table file (Off97pro.stf or Off97std.stf). If the location moves, you can point to Setup.exe at the new network location. For example, you can set this policy to newserver\newshare\Setup.exe.Note Setting this policy to a new location does not work if any components are run from the server — all Office files must be installed locally. For example, if additional clip art files reside on the server, moving the installation location means users do not have access to the old clip art. To give users access to clip art from the server, you must use the clip art policy described later in this section to point to the new server location.
Computer\Office 97\Assistant\Installed Path
This policy gives the location of the Assistant files (ACT and ACP files). If you move the Assistant files, you can specify the new location of the files with this policy. This location may be a network server. For example, if you want to place all Assistants on a network server, enter that location here, and users will automatically have access to them from the server.
Computer\Office 97\Assistant\Source Path
When a user browses the Assistant Gallery to choose a different Assistant, Office looks for Assistant files in the path specified in the Computer\Office 97\Assistant\Installed Path policy. If an ACP file is found, Office uses this as a preview of the Assistant. If the user chooses that Assistant, Office looks in the path specified in this policy for the equivalent ACT file and installs the file on the user's computer. This path defaults to the administrative installation point or the Office CD from which the user installed Office.If you want to place the Assistant ACT files in another location, such as on a different server, use this policy to change that location.
Excel Policies
The following computer setting policy appears in the Excel 97 group in the System Policy Editor.
Computer\Excel 97\Converters\Excel 9.0 Import Converters
When Microsoft makes import converters available for future versions of Microsoft Excel, place them on your intranet and use this policy to set a URL to the download location.
Outlook 97 Policies
The following computer setting policy appears in the Outlook 97 group in the System Policy Editor.
Computer\Outlook 97\Use Schedule+
This policy corresponds to the Use Microsoft Schedule+ 95 as my primary calendar option on the Calendar tab in the Options dialog box (Tools menu) in Microsoft Outlook. If this policy is set, Outlook uses Schedule+ 95 for calendar operations. In addition, setting this policy disables the option in Outlook so the user cannot override the setting.Note Schedule+ 95 must be installed to use this policy.
PowerPoint Policies
The following computer setting policy appears in the PowerPoint 97 group in the System Policy Editor.
Computer\PowerPoint 97\Converters\PowerPoint 9.0 Import Converters
When Microsoft makes import converters available for future versions of Microsoft PowerPoint, place them on your intranet and use this policy to set a URL to the download location.
Word 97 Policies
The following computer setting policies appears in the Word 97 group in the System Policy Editor.
Computer\Word 97\Spelling Advanced\Default AutoCorrect File
The default Office AutoCorrect (ACL) file is Mso97.acl. When a new user needs an ACL file, it is copied from Mso97.acl and renamed Username.acl. If you want all users to start with a custom ACL file, you can create your own ACL file, save it to a network location, and use this policy to point to it. To create your own ACL file, run Microsoft Word and add entries to the AutoCorrect list with the AutoCorrect command (Tools menu). These changes are saved in the Windows folder.Note The new ACL file you create includes all the entries from the default Mso97.acl.
Computer\Word 97\Converters\Word 9.0 Import Converters
When Microsoft makes import converters available for future versions of Word, place them on your intranet and use this policy to set a URL to the download location.
Clip Art Gallery 3.0 Policies
The following computer setting policies appear in the ClipArtGallery 3.0 group in the System Policy Editor.
Computer\Clip ArtGallery 3.0\Concurrent Database #1, #2, and #3
These three policies may be used to make more clip art content available to users. You can create new Clip Art Gallery databases (CAG files) and store them on a server. They can contain regular clip art files (WMF); picture files (BMP, GIF, and so on); or multimedia files (AVI or WAV). Three policies are included to allow you to divide clip art among one, two, or three files.
Windows Policies
The following computer setting policy appears in the Windows group in the System Policy Editor.
Computer\Windows\Network Install Tab
The Network Install tab in the Add/Remove Programs dialog box (Control Panel) allows you to distribute software that users can install.To create the Network Install tab, first create an INI file containing a section called AppInstallList with a collection of name and value pairs. The user sees the application name listed on the Network Install tab, and the value specifies which command installs the software. For example, the following entry adds three new list box items to the Network Install tab — Developer Tools, Productivity Tools, and Games:

User Settings
User setting policies apply to all users regardless of the computer to which they log on. If you make the setting to the Default User icon, then the setting applies to all users logged on to computers that load these policies. If you create a new user or group icon using the Add User or Add Group command (Edit menu), then the settings apply only to that user or users in that group, regardless of which computer they log on to.
You can view and set user policies in the System Policy Editor by double-clicking the Default User icon or, if you have added a new user or group, by double-clicking the new user or group icon.
Microsoft on the Web Policies
The user setting policies described in the following sections appear in the Help_Microsoft on the Web group in the System Policy Editor. They correspond to commands on the Microsoft on the Web submenu (Help menu) in the Office applications.
For more information about customizing the commands that appear on the Microsoft on the Web submenu, see "Customizing Office Connections to the World Wide Web," in Chapter 7, "Customizing and Optimizing Microsoft Office." The instructions in Chapter 7 describe how to use the Windows Registry Editor to disable commands on this menu and add your own custom commands. You can accomplish the same tasks for multiple users at one time by using the policies described in this section. In addition, you can set a policy that resets the commands on this menu to the default whenever users log on to the network.
Note These three policies should be used one at a time. If you set more than one, only the last policy set takes effect. For example, you might select the Customize submenu policy and enter several commands, and then select the Disable submenu policy and save the file. In this case, the Microsoft on the Web submenu on the user's computer is disabled, not customized.
User\ application \Internet\Help_Microsoft on the Web\Customize submenu
This policy allows you to customize the commands that appear on the Microsoft on the Web submenu (Help menu) in any Office 97 application. If you open this policy under the Office 97 group in the System Policy Editor, then you can customize the first set of as many as eight commands displayed on the menu. If you open this policy under an application group (for example, the Word 97 group), then you can customize the second set of as many as eight commands (the application-specific commands) displayed on the menu. You cannot customize the last command on the menu, which is a hyperlink to the Microsoft home page on the World Wide Web.When you select the Customize submenu policy in the System Policy Editor, the Settings for Customize submenu box displays text boxes in which you can enter as many as eight menu commands. Initially, the default commands are displayed. The custom string you enter for each command is identical to the string used in the Value data field in the Windows registry. For more information about the format of these commands, see "Customizing Office Connections to the World Wide Web," in Chapter 7, "Customizing and Optimizing Microsoft Office."Note In this policy, application may be Access 97, Excel 97, Outlook 97, PowerPoint 97, or Word 97.
User\ application \Internet\Help_Microsoft on the Web\Reset Submenu to Original Defaults
This policy deletes all customized commands on the Microsoft on the Web submenu, which causes the application to use the default settings. After this policy is set, the HKEY_CURRENT_USER \Software \Microsoft \Office \8.0\application\WebHelp registry key still exists, but all of the Command1 to Command8 value entries are deleted. This is equivalent to using the Customize submenu policy to set all of the value entries to empty strings.Note In this policy, application may be Office 97, Access 97, Excel 97, Outlook 97, PowerPoint 97, or Word 97.
User\ application \Internet\Help_Microsoft on the Web\Disable Submenu
This policy disables the commands on the Microsoft on the Web submenu. If you open this policy under an application group in the System Policy Editor, then the application-specific commands and the separator line are removed. If you also disable the Office-wide commands (by opening this policy under the Office 97 group), then the default commands are displayed but they are unavailable.Note In this policy, application may be Office 97, Access 97, Excel 97, Outlook 97, PowerPoint 97, or Word 97.
Internet Policies
The following user setting policies affect user access to various resources available on the Internet. These policies appear under several application groups in the System Policy Editor.
User\Office\Internet\FTP Sites\Add FTP Sites
This policy adds up to 10 FTP sites under the Look in box in the Open dialog box (File menu). When you set this policy in the System Policy Editor, the Settings for Add FTP Sites list displays 10 FTP sites. The registry keys associated with these site addresses are HKEY_CURRENT_USER \Software \Microsoft \Office \8.0\Common\Internet\FTP Sites\site_0 through site_9. The value name is Site Name and its value is **ftp://**address. There can be more than 10 sites in the list, but the Office template can set only 10 at one time.To enter an FTP site, you must type ftp:// in front of the site address. By default, the Office template file enters ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/ for the first site and enters the ftp:// prefix for the remaining sites.Each time the user logs on, Windows adds the sites identified in the policy to the list of sites in the registry if they do not already exist. If you change the sites in the policy, the new sites are added to the registry the next time a user logs on.Note To remove FTP sites from the user's registry, use the Delete FTP Sites policy.
User\Office\Internet\FTP Sites\Delete FTP Sites
This policy is used to remove FTP sites from the Open dialog box (File menu). The policy can clear only the first 10 sites in the user's registry. If a user has 15 sites, then the first 10 are cleared the first time the user logs on, and the remaining 5 are cleared the second time the user logs on (provided the user has not added more FTP sites in the meantime).Note If you set both this policy and the Add FTP Sites policy, as many as 10 existing sites are deleted from the user's registry before the new sites are added.
User\ application \Internet\Converters\Future File Format Converters
Office applications use the registry value set by this policy to find additional file converters. By setting this policy to an intranet site, for example, you can install new converters on the server as they become available and give users access to them. To define a Web site with this policy, enter the URL.Note In this policy, application may be Excel 97, Outlook 97, PowerPoint 97, or **Word 97.**This policy is similar to the policy **Computer\application\Converters\**application 9.0 Converters described earlier in this chapter, but there are several significant differences. The policy User\application\Internet\Converters\Future File Format Converters addresses any site on the corporate intranet or on the Internet, and Office applications download converters found at the site to the user's hard disk to be used locally.The policy **Computer\application\Converters\**application 9.0 Converters also references a site on the intranet; but instead of copying the converters locally, the Office applications use them over the network. Also, this policy is specific to the future version of Office 9.0. The Web site referenced by policy User\application\Internet\Converters\Future File Format Converters may contain a variety of future file format converters.
User\Internet Explorer 3.0\Options_Navigation
This policy allows you to set the Start Page and Search Pages for Microsoft Internet Explorer version 3.0 by entering a URL. The associated registry key is HKEY_CURRENT_USER \Software \Microsoft \Internet Explorer\Main, and the value entries are Start Page = URL and Search Page = URL.
Web Search Policies
The following user setting policy appears in the Web Search group in the System Policy Editor. The Internet Lookup Options policy enables the On the Internet and On Web FindFast Index commands to appear on the Look Up submenu, which appears on the Word shortcut menu when the Ilookup.dot template is properly installed.

User\Office 97\Internet\Web Search\Internet Lookup Options
This policy sets the values in the Internet Lookup Options subkey in the Windows registry. The following table describes and provides examples for each of the value entries in the Internet Lookup Options subkey.

Office 97 Policies
The following user setting policies affect Office applications in general. These appear under the Office 97 heading in the System Policy Editor.
User\Office 97\Common\User Templates
This policy defines a path to user templates on a network server or on the hard disk. These templates are added to the list of local templates in the New dialog box with tabs for subfolders of the Program Files\Microsoft Office\Templates folder. (The New dialog box is displayed when you click New Office Document on the Windows Start menu, or when you click New on the File menu in any Office application.)
User\Office 97\Common\Workgroup Templates
This policy defines a path to workgroup templates on a network server or on the local hard disk. These templates are merged with local templates in the New dialog box with tabs for subfolders of the Program Files\Microsoft Office\Templates folder. (The New dialog box is displayed when you click New Office Document on the Windows Start menu, or when you click New on the File menu in any Office application.)
User\Office 97\Common\Personal Folder
This policy specifies the location of the My Documents folder by modifying the Personal value entry in the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER \Software \Microsoft \Windows \CurrentVersion \Explorer \User Shell Folders. Windows propagates the Personal value from this key to the subkey Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders.
On Windows 95, both the User Shell Folders subkey and the Shell Folders subkey are type REG_SZ (strings). On Windows NT Workstation 4.0, however, the User Shell Folders subkey is type REG_EXPAND_SZ (expandable string), which allows it to store environment variables such as %homedir%, %username%, and %userprofile%. When the Windows NT Workstation shell propagates the Personal value from User Shell Folders to Shell Folders, it also expands any environment variables.
For example, if the registry contains:

This is expanded on Windows NT Workstation 4.0 to:

In addition to setting these keys, this policy disables the Personal Folder path for each individual application by deleting the value entries for the following subkeys under HKEY_CURRENT_USER. These values are deleted so that applications use the common Office personal folder.

By using environment variables in Windows NT Workstation 4.0, the following steps show how to create separate My Documents folders for users on a single network server.
Create a folder on a network location and give all users read and write access.
For example, create the network share Server\UserData.
Add a home directory to users' profiles.
For example, map Z: to Server\UserData\%username%.
Use this policy to set the personal folder to %homedir%\%username%.
The environment variables %homedir% and %username% are substituted in the registry as appropriate for each user.
You may want to store user data so the user has separate personal folders for each application. The Office policy templates define only a global personal folder for all Office applications. By modifying the policy template, however, you can create policies for each individual application.
User\Office\Common\Sound
This policy turns Office sounds on or off for all applications.
Access Policies
Microsoft Access-specific policies appear under the Access 97 heading in the System Policy Editor.
Access supports Internet settings similar to those supported by the other Office applications. The remaining Access policies represent options available in the Options dialog box (Tools menu).
Note Access does not support a default Save As format, so there is no corresponding policy.
Excel Policies
The following user setting policies are used by Excel. These appear under the Excel 97 heading in the System Policy Editor.
User\Excel 97\Tools_Options\General\Alternate Startup Folder
This policy specifies that the alternate startup folder should be used for default workbook or worksheet templates. If the file Book.xlt is in the alternate startup folder, it is copied when the user clicks the New command (File menu). Similarly, if the user clicks the Worksheet command (Insert menu), Excel looks for Sheet.xls in the alternate startup folder. You can use these templates to specify such worksheet elements as fonts and page formatting for printing.
User\Excel 97\Tools_Options\Transition\Default Save
This policy is used to set the default format in which to save Excel workbooks. Valid formats include the following:

Custom toolbar settings are stored in Username8.xlb, which is located in the Excel folder. Use this policy to change the location for the XLB file. If there is no XLB file in the new location, Excel creates one. The location can be a local folder, or you can set it to a folder on a network server.When you enter the new location, be sure to include the trailing backslash (\) as shown here:server**\share\**folder\
User\Excel 97\Miscellaneous\Chart Gallery
This policy specifies the path to a custom chart gallery. The file name is Xlusrgal.gra.Note This policy applies only to Excel. The policy User\Office\Common\Chart Gallery is a similar policy for other Office applications; that policy uses the file name Grusrgal.gra.
Outlook Policies
The following user setting policies are used by Outlook. These appear under the Outlook 97 heading in the System Policy Editor.
User\Outlook 97\Tools_Options\E-mail\WordMail
This policy allows you to set WordMail as the electronic mail (e-mail) editor. Valid options are Always, Never, and If there is enough RAM. The third option checks the computer, and if there is 16 MB or more on a Windows 95 operating system or 24 MB or more on a Windows NT operating system, the option is set.
User\Outlook 97\Tools_Options\E-mail\WordMail Template
This policy allows you to specify a path to a WordMail template. This can be a network location.
User\Outlook 97\Tools_Options\Journal\Automatically record these items
You can use this policy to determine which events, such as e-mail or meeting requests, create journal entries.
User\Outlook 97\Tools_Options\Journal\Also record these files
You can use this policy to set which Office applications create journal entries.
User\Outlook 97\Tools_Options\Journal\ Journal Entry Options
This policy allows you to choose whether double-clicking a journal entry opens the entry or opens the associated item (such as a Word document).
User\Outlook 97\Miscellaneous\Disable Forms Designer
This policy allows you to disable the Forms Designer so that the user cannot create or modify custom Outlook forms.
PowerPoint Policies
The following user setting policies are used by PowerPoint. These appear under the PowerPoint 97 heading in the System Policy Editor.
User\PowerPoint 97\Tools_Options\Save\Default Save
This policy is used to set the default format in which to save PowerPoint presentations. Valid formats include the following:

User\PowerPoint 97\Miscellaneous\No Edit Time
This policy allows you to turn off the document property Total Editing Time, which appears on the Statistics tab in the Document Properties dialog box (File menu). The field is still displayed, but it always shows 0 minutes.
User\PowerPoint 97\Miscellaneous\Multimedia Directory
This policy specifies a location for AVI and WAV files inserted by the Movie from File or Sound from File commands (Insert menu, Movies and Sounds submenu). This location may be on a network server. The user cannot set this location in PowerPoint. The default location is the folder in which Office Media was installed (for example, C:\Windows\Media\Office 97). This policy allows you to make additional multimedia content available on the network.
User\PowerPoint 97\Miscellaneous\Picture Directory
This policy specifies a location for clip art files inserted by the From File command (Insert menu, Picture submenu). This location may be on a network server. The user cannot set this location in PowerPoint. The default is the Microsoft Office\Clip Art folder on the user's computer. This policy allows you to make additional multimedia content available on the network.
User\PowerPoint 97\Miscellaneous\Template Directory
This policy specifies a location for template files attached by the Apply Design command (Format menu). This location may be on a network server. The user cannot set this location in PowerPoint. The default is the Program Files\Microsoft Office\Templates\Presentations Designs folder on the user's computer.Note The User\Office 97\Common\User Templates and User\Office 97\Common\Workgroup Templates policies described earlier in this section can also set the PowerPoint template used when the user clicks the Open command (File menu).
User\PowerPoint 97\Miscellaneous\Personal Toolbars
This policy is similar to the Excel policy of the same name described earlier in this section.Custom toolbar settings are stored in Username8.pcb, which is located by default in the Windows folder. Use this policy to change the location for the PCB file. If there is no PCB file in the new location, PowerPoint creates one. The location can be a local folder, or you can set it to a folder on a network server.Note Unlike the corresponding Excel policy, the trailing backslash (\) is not required in the path.
Word Policies
The following user setting policies are used by Word. These appear under the Word 97 heading in the System Policy Editor.
User\Word 97\Tools_Options\Save\Default Save
This policy is used to set the default format in which to save Word documents. Valid formats include the following:

User\Word 97\Tools_Options\File Locations
This policy sets the various file locations used by Word and corresponds to options on the File Locations tab in the Options dialog box (Tools menu).Note Two locations are not specified in this policy. One of these corresponds to the Template option on the File Locations tab in the Options dialog box (Tools menu), which is specified in the User\Office 97\Common policy (the template path for all Office applications). The other location corresponds to the User Options option.
User\Word 97\Tools_AutoFormat\AutoCorrect\Plain Text WordMail Documents
This policy allows you to change the default value of the Plain text WordMail Documents option on the AutoFormat tab in the AutoCorrect dialog box (Tools menu). It is selected by default.
Microsoft Query Policies
The following user setting policies are used by Microsoft Query. These appear under the Query 97 heading in the System Policy Editor.
User\Query 97\File_New\Data Source Folders
You can use this policy to create a list of folders to be displayed in the Choose Data Source dialog box. (To display the dialog box, click New on the File menu.) Files with a .dsn extension are displayed on the Databases tab; files with a .dqy extension are displayed on the Queries tab.
To add folders to the Choose Data Source dialog box
In the System Policy Editor, select the User\Query 97\File_New\Data Source Folders policy.
In the Settings for Data Source Folders box, click Show.
In the Show Contents dialog box, click Add.
In the Add Item dialog box, enter a path (this may be a network location), and then click OK.
Repeat Steps 3 and 4 for each folder you want to add.
User\Query 97\File_New\Use Wizard
This policy controls the state of the check box in the Choose Data Source dialog box. (To display the dialog box, click New on the File menu.) If the check box is selected, Query edits and creates queries using the Query Wizard.
User\Query 97\Edit_Options\Disable Options
This policy disables the Options command (Edit menu), making the user settings in the Options dialog box unavailable.
User\Query 97\Edit_Options\Connection Timeout
This policy sets the Cancel the connection if not connected within number seconds option in the Options dialog box (Edit menu). In the System Policy Editor, you can set the value for number.
User\Query 97\Edit_Options\Limit Records
This policy sets the Limit number of records returned to number records option in the Options dialog box (Edit menu). In the System Policy Editor, you can set the value for number.
User\Query 97\Edit_Options\Auto Disconnect
This policy sets the Keep connections open until MS Query is closed option in the Options dialog box (Edit menu).
User\Query 97\Edit_Options\Disable Edit
This policy sets the Disable ability to edit query results option in the Options dialog box (Edit menu).
User\Query 97\Edit_Options\Table Options\Show Tables
This policy sets the Tables option in the Table Options dialog box (Table menu, Add Tables submenu).
User\Query 97\Edit_Options\Table Options\Show Views
This policy sets the Views option in the Table Options dialog box (Table menu, Add Tables submenu).
User\Query 97\Edit_Options\Table Options\Show System Tables
This policy sets the System Tables option in the Table Options dialog box (Table menu, Add Tables submenu).
User\Query 97\Edit_Options\Table Options\Show Synonyms
This policy sets the Synonyms option in the Table Options dialog box (Table menu, Add Tables submenu).
User\Query 97\Records\Automatic Query
This policy sets the Automatic Query option on the Records menu. When this option is selected (a check mark appears next to the Automatic Query command on the menu), then every time you add a field to a query, the query is updated. Clear this option if you have large queries that take a long time to run.
User\ODBC 3.0\Default DSN Folder
This policy allows you to specify a default folder for ODBC file data source names (DSNs). A file DSN specifies a database name, the ODBC used to gain access to the database, and additional connection information and settings. The contents of the specified folder are displayed on the Databases tab in the Choose Data Source dialog box when you create or edit a query. The default folder created by Setup is C:\Program Files\Common Files\ODBC\Data Sources.
Bookshelf Policies
The following user setting policy is used by Microsoft Bookshelf. This appears under the Bookshelf heading in the System Policy Editor.
User\Bookshelf\Location of Bookshelf Content
This policy allows you to enter a path to the location of Bookshelf files. You can change this setting if you want to move Bookshelf to a different server.
List of Office 97 System Policies
This section lists all policies available in the policy template files. The order in this section corresponds to the order in which the policies are defined in the Office policy template files, and closely matches the order in which they appear in the System Policy Editor.
The policies in the templates have been arranged in two sections. Policies grouped under the heading "User Settings" are specific to the user currently logged on to a computer. These policies correspond to HKEY_CURRENT_USER keys in the Windows registry. Policies grouped under the heading "Computer Settings" apply to all users running a particular computer. These policies correspond to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE keys in the Windows registry.
Under these headings, the policies are grouped by component or (when applicable) by how the corresponding option may be set by the user. For example, all Office 97 Office Assistant policies are grouped together, and all policies that correspond to the Edit tab in the Options dialog box (Excel Tools menu) are grouped together.
