Troubleshoot customized virtual disks (Compact 2013)

This section discusses common issues you might encounter when you customize the sample virtual hard disk (VHD) or virtual floppy disk (VFD), or when you create your own virtual disk. Error Message or Symptom

Cause and Solution

Boot failure. Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device

The boot disk does not contain a boot loader.

  • Check the virtual device settings to make sure you selected the correct VHD or VFD.
  • If you created your own virtual disk, make sure you created a valid Compact 2013 boot disk. Copying a boot loader file to the disk is not sufficient. For more information, see Create a Bootable Compact 2013 Disk.

ERROR: No bootable OS found!*** Setting to lower power state ****** HALT ***

The boot disk contains a boot loader but does not contain a valid run-time image.

  • If you’re using the boot loader file WCELDR, make sure the image file is named NK.bin. For more information, see Create a Bootable Compact 2013 Disk.
  • Check the boot settings on the virtual device. For more information, see Check the boot source settings on the sample virtual disk.
  • Check the run-time image on the boot disk. If necessary, recreate the boot disk with a new run-time image. For more information, see Create a Bootable Compact 2013 Disk.

The virtual device will not boot, and I don’t see any of the error messages listed above.
  • Make sure you used the correct BSP tool to create the boot disk. For more information, see Create a Bootable Compact 2013 Disk.
  • Make sure the hypervisor boot settings do not conflict with the virtual device boot settings. For more information, see Check the hypervisor boot settings.

Check the hypervisor boot settings

  • Make sure the hypervisor boot settings do not conflict with the boot loader boot settings. In Hyper-V, check the BIOS settings under the virtual machine settings to make sure the boot device order is correct.
  • Remove any unnecessary hardware from the virtual device settings. For example, if you are not booting from a floppy disk, make sure to remove any VFDs from the virtual machine settings.

Check the boot source settings on the sample virtual disk

When you use the boot loader from the sample VHD, use the following procedure to change the boot source.

To change the boot source of sample virtual disk

  1. Start the virtual device, and then open the Configuration menu.

  2. On the Main menu, type 2 (Select Boot Source).

  3. On the Select Boot Source menu, select the boot source you want to use for this device. Type 1 to boot from a local disk drive or 2 to boot from the network adapter.

  4. When the virtual device returns to the Select Boot Source menu, type 0 (Exit and Continue) to return to the Main menu.

  5. On the Main menu, type 7 (Save Settings), and if you want the new boot source to persist after the device reboots, type 0 (Exit and Continue).
