Start or Stop a Non-Plug and Play Device Driver

Applies To: Windows Server 2008

This topic provides a procedure that you can use to start or stop the device drivers for devices that do not conform to the Plug and Play specification. For a Plug and Play device, see Enable or Disable a Plug and Play Device.

Membership in the local Administrators group, or equivalent, is the minimum required to complete this procedure.

To start or stop a device driver for a non-Plug and Play device

  1. Open Device Manager.

  2. Click the View menu, and then click Show hidden devices.

  3. In the list of devices, double-click Non-Plug and Play Drivers, right-click the device you want, and then click Properties.

  4. On the Driver tab, click Start or Stop, and then click OK.

Additional considerations

  • If the Start button on the Driver tab is unavailable, the driver is already started.
