Configuring Internet Mail in Windows Small Business Server 2008

This documentation describes the features and tools that are included in Windows® Small Business Server 2008 to enable users to send and receive e-mail over the Internet.

Topics in this document provide information and step-by-step instructions that help you set up and configure features that enable you to perform the following tasks:

  • Send and receive e-mail over the Internet

    You can use the wizards included with Windows SBS 2008 to configure your Internet connection, Internet address, and the e-mail connectors that are necessary to route e-mail over the Internet. By using the Configure Internet Mail Wizard, you can also choose to configure a “smart host” server, which helps optimize server performance and make Internet mail more secure and reliable.

    For information about configuring your server to send and receive e-mail over the Internet, see the section Routing Exchange Server e-mail over the Internet later in this document.

  • Retrieve POP3 e-mail and deliver it to user’s mailboxes

    The Windows SBS 2008 POP3 Connector enables you to retrieve e-mail from external POP3 mailboxes and deliver it to the appropriate user’s mailbox on the Exchange Server. For example, you can retrieve e-mail from the POP3 mailbox for Chris@adatum.com (where adatum.com is the domain name of Chris' Internet service provider), and then deliver it to your Exchange Server mailbox for Chris@contoso.com.

  • Use Outlook® Anywhere to connect to your Exchange server over the Internet

    The Outlook Anywhere feature lets your Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 and Outlook 2003 clients connect to their Exchange Servers over the Internet by using the Remote Procedure Calls (RPC) over HTTP Windows networking component.

  • Use Outlook Web Access to send and receive e-mail by using a Web browser

    Windows SBS 2008 includes Microsoft® Office Outlook Web Access. When it is enabled, Outlook Web Access allows authorized users to access their network mailbox by using a Web browser.
