Upgrade Operations Manager databases to SQL Server 2019

Operations Manager 2019 supports SQL 2019 with CU8 or later; however, it does not support SQL 2019 RTM.

Use the steps in this article to perform an in-place upgrade of the databases supporting Operations Manager to SQL Server 2019 (with CU8 or later). Before proceeding, you should back up any custom authored reports, favorites, and schedules, which are stored in the report server database.

Note

  • You must use Cumulative Update 8 (CU8) or later with SQL 2019.
  • Use ODBC 17.3 or later, and MSOLEDBSQL 18.2 or later.
  • Upgrading to SQL Server 2019 uninstalls SQL Reporting Services, as this is now a separately-installed feature.

Before performing these upgrade steps, review the SQL Server 2019 upgrade information.

Stop the Operations Manager services

On all the management servers in the management group, stop the Operations Manager services:

  • System Center Data Access
  • Microsoft Monitoring Agent
  • System Center Management Configuration

Back up the Reporting server database

  1. On the SQL Server hosting the Reporting server databases, create a full backup of the ReportServer and ReportServerTempDB database. For more information, see Create a Full Database Backup (SQL Server).

  2. On the current Operations Manager reporting server, back up the SSRS encryption key. For more information, see SSRS Encryption Keys - Back Up and Restore Encryption Keys.

  3. Back up the report server configuration files. Files to back up include:

    • Web.config

Uninstall Operations Manager reporting server

  1. On the Operations Manager reporting server, uninstall the Operations Manager reporting server component as follows:

    a. Open Control Panel, and then click Programs and Features.

    b. In Programs and Features, select System Center Operations Manager, and then click Uninstall.

    c. In the Operations Manager Setup wizard, click Remove a feature.

    d. In the Select features to remove page, select Reporting server, and then click Uninstall. Click Close when the wizard finishes.

  2. Perform the upgrade to SQL Server 2019 following the steps described in SQL 2019 documentation.

Install SQL Server 2019 Reporting services

Note

With SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) 2019, the default security settings do not allow resource extension uploads. This leads to ResourceFileFormatNotAllowedException exceptions in Operations Manager during deployment of reporting components.

To fix this, open SQL Management Studio, connect to your Reporting Services instance, open Properties>Advanced, and add *.* to the list for AllowedResourceExtensionsForUpload. Alternatively, you can add the full list of Operations Manager's reporting extensions to the allow list in SSRS.

To download SQL Server 2019 Reporting services, go to the Microsoft Download Center.

After a successful setup, select Configure Report Server to launch the Reporting Services Configuration Manager. This is necessary to configure Reporting Services to:

  1. Configure the report server database and select the existing report server database that already contains the content you want to use.

  2. Restore the symmetric key that is used to encrypt stored connection strings and credentials.

  3. Create and configure the Web Service and Web Portal URLs.

  4. Run regedit from an elevated Command Prompt and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\SSRS\MSSQLServer\CurrentVersion. Note the value for the key CurrentVersion.

  5. Create a registry REG_SZ value named Version under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\SSRS\Setup\ with REG_SZ value noted in the previous step.

  6. Reboot the server in order for the changes to take effect.

Verify the installation of SQL Report server

After reinstalling the Operations Manager reporting server component, perform the following steps to confirm SQL Reporting Services is working correctly.

  1. Run the Reporting Services Configuration tool and connect to the report server instance you installed. The Web Service URL page includes a link to the Report Server Web service. Click the link to verify you can access the server.

  2. Open a browser and type the report server URL in the address bar. The address consists of the server name and the virtual directory name that you specified for the report server during setup. By default, the report server virtual directory is named ReportServer. You can use the following URL to verify report server installation: http://<computer name>/ReportServer<_instance name>. The URL will be different if you installed the report server as a named instance.

  3. To verify that the web portal is installed and running, open a browser and type the Web Portal URL in the address bar. The address consists of the server name and the virtual directory name that you specified for the web portal during setup or in the Web Portal URL page in the Reporting Services Configuration tool. By default, the web portal virtual directory is Reports. You can use the following URL to verify the web portal installation: http://<computer name>/Reports<_instance name>.

Install Operations Manager Reporting server

After the upgrade is complete, perform the following steps to install Operations Manager Reporting server.

Optional - Enable CLR strict security

To enable CLR strict security on the Operations Manager databases, run the following SQL script on each Operations Manager database (by default, CLR strict security will be OFF after upgrading to SQL Server 2019).
