Mindfulness

Social emotional learning and Mindfulness are separate concepts.

Social emotional learning is an approach that focuses on teaching skills through an outside-in approach. Mindfulness is an inside-out approach, focused on developing qualities such as kindness, empathy, and compassion.

Mindfulness is the skill of being aware of the present moment without judging it. It's a skill that, when practiced regularly over time, helps improve emotion regulation and focus.

The impacts of mindfulness are beneficial to all students. Research by the American Psychological Association shows that practicing mindfulness results in:

  • Stress reduction
  • Boost in working memory
  • Increase in focus
  • Less emotional reactivity
  • More cognitive flexibility
  • Satisfaction of relationships
