Introduction

Completed

This module is designed to guide educators to better understand the Chemistry and Science functionality in Minecraft: Education Edition and how the game supports inquiry and curiosity for all students.

Essential question

How does Minecraft: Education Edition Chemistry in Minecraft support safe, equitable, and rigorous learning experiences?

Learning objectives

  • Use the Element Constructor to build as many as 118 elements from the Periodic Table based on the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons in each element.
  • Use the Compound Creator to combine elements into as many as 30 compounds and then use the Lab Table to create additional Minecraft items.
  • Reduce blocks to their component elements with the Material Reducer.
  • Use the provided Educator Lab book as a guide to the chemistry crafting exercises.
  • Locate and download additional chemistry (and related) science lessons from the Minecraft: Education Edition site.

Vocabulary

Graphic of tutorial world.

Tutorial World: For educators or students new to Minecraft, a tutorial world is available that will guide players on in-game navigation, crafting, and placing or breaking blocks.

Graphic of teleport.

Teleport: A strategy to move around a world using the teleport command (/tp) prompt with known coordinates or an NPC teleport location.

Graphic of coordinates.

Coordinates: Commands recognize two types of locations, true location, and relative location. True coordinates correspond to the unique location of a spot in game (the map shows your character’s true coordinate); Relative coordinates correspond to (x, y, z) distances from the location of the in-game character, and are represented using the tilde sign (~).

Graphic of non-player characters.

Non-Player Characters: An educator may create an NPC (Non-Player Character) to act as a guide for students in the game, giving instructions, providing more information, and also allowing educators to insert an active web link to additional references.

Graphic of lab journal.

Lab Journal: Provides a visual glossary; explains how to use the crafting tools and access sample Minecraft chemistry lessons.

Graphic of crafting in chemistry.

Crafting in Chemistry: Just like crafting in other Minecraft: Education Edition worlds, Chemistry has recipes and formulas to follow to produce the desired outcome.

Graphic of crafting table.

Crafting Tables: Chemistry crafting tables follow rules very similar to the actual rules our students must learn about the Periodic Table of elements and provide accurate representation of those experiments in the virtual world.
