Why search strategies matter

Completed

Students use the internet across every subject to build background knowledge, gather information, and support what they create - papers, presentations, lab reports, and projects. But effective searching isn't just about finding something. It requires asking better questions, refining results with intention, and evaluating sources beyond surface cues like how professional a site looks.

These aren't isolated "internet skills." They're thinking skills—and they transfer everywhere: to evaluating AI-generated content, parsing social media posts, and making sense of any information students encounter in their lives.

Search Coach and Search Progress support learners in building these habits by making the research process visible—to students themselves and to you as their educator. They do this by supporting learners in:

  • Forming effective search queries
  • Using filters to narrow or broaden results intentionally
  • Evaluating sources and cross-checking claims
  • Reflecting on and clearly communicating their research choices (especially within a structured assignment)
