How to use the Consumption Dashboard in Insights

The Consumption Dashboard in Insights helps your organization understand how Copilot Credits and GitHub AI Credits are consumed across agents, services, and users. Use it to monitor active users, track credit usage over time, see which services and teams drive consumption, and spot users and spending policies that are nearing their limits.

Note

Credit usage information in this dashboard is for reference only. For official billing and detailed charges, visit the Microsoft 365 admin center for Copilot Credits or GitHub.com for GitHub AI credits.

Who can access the dashboard

Consumption insights are available to Insights Analysts with global partition access, Managers, and Microsoft 365 Global Administrators. The table below shows which roles can access which consumption features:

Note

Currently, consumption insights are only available to the users listed above. The Consumption Dashboard is not available for users who have access to the Microsoft Copilot and Agent Dashboard in the Viva Insights web app (learn more), or Insights Analysts with access to a partition other than the global partition. Insights Analysts with access to a partition other than the global partition can't run queries with consumption metrics.

Manage access to consumption insights

Applies to: Insights Administrator

Users with the Insights Analyst role with global partition access can access the consumption insights. To remove access to consumption insights for specific analysts, remove them from the global partition. Learn more about Partitions in Insights.

Note

If you remove an analyst from the global partition, they lose access to all experiences in the global partition.

Currently, consumption insights are not available to analysts in non-global partitions.

You can set up and edit Manager settings to allow managers to access consumption insights. By default, consumption insights are enabled for all managers. Learn more about Manager settings.

Delegate access

If you have access to the dashboard, you can't currently delegate access to other people in your company. Delegate access functionality will expand over time.

Identification in the dashboard

Identification lets your organization move from anonymized metrics to known users, surfacing named employees (identified outputs) when added precision is needed and permitted. Identified outputs let you act on data with precision instead of stopping at organization-wide averages. Learn how to turn on Identification.

Navigate the dashboard

The Consumption Dashboard is organized into two pages, which you switch between using the tabs near the top of the dashboard:

• Microsoft 365 services – detailed credit usage for agents and services such as Copilot Cowork and Work IQ API

• GitHub – detailed GitHub Copilot usage and credit consumption

Each page includes a set of filters at the top so you can focus your analysis:

• Scope - choose between your company and your group. The Company filter is only available to Insights Analysts and Microsoft 365 Global Administrators.
• Organization - filter by organization or department.
• Job function - filter by job function.
• Time period - shows the time period (Month to date)

How to use the scope, organization, and job function filters

The Scope, Organization, and Job function filters at the top of the dashboard let you filter the insights by employee groups and attributes. These filters work similarly to and are sourced the same way as the filters in the Copilot Dashboard. Learn more.

Microsoft 365 services page

The Microsoft 365 services page provides a detailed view of credit usage for Microsoft 365 services, including trends over time, distribution across services and teams, usage intensity by user segment, and spending policy limits.

Note

Consumption data is currently available only for Copilot Cowork and the Work IQ API.

Summary metrics

At the top of the page, summary cards show the totals for the selected scope and time period:

• Active users - unique users who took at least one action in Copilot Cowork or the Work IQ API.
• Total Copilot credit usage - total Copilot Credits consumed.
• Total session count - total number Cowork or WorkIQ API of sessions initiated by users.

Usage trends

This section identifies how credit usage and user activity change over time and across groups. Use the controls above the chart to adjust the view:

• Metric - choose the metric to plot, such as credits used.
• Filter by - break the trend down by group, organization or job function.
• Date range - choose the granularity, such as day.

Credit usage breakdown by service

This section shows how credit usage is distributed across services and groups. The breakdown chart compares total credits used per service, and the matrix below it shows credits used by each service across groups, helping you spot the highest-usage areas (for example, the function with the highest usage of the Work IQ API). The matrix view is only available for managers of managers with sufficiently large groups.

Usage intensity

This section shows how credit usage is distributed across users by usage segment, so you can see whether a small group of users drives most consumption. Segments include:

• All users.
• Top 1 percent of users.
• Top 5 percent of users.
• Top 6 - 25 percent of users.
• Top 26 - 50 percent of users.

For each segment, the table reports total credits used, average credits used per user, average credits used per session, average sessions per user, and active users.

Credit usage breakdown by spending policy

This section identifies which spending policies are nearing their credit limit. It shows the policies whose users are closest to their limits so you can act before they're depleted. For the top policies in use, the table reports:

GitHub page

Important

The GitHub Copilot page provides insights around the number of credits consumed and usage for GitHub Copilot, a Copilot-powered coding assistant, how those credits are consumed across different employee groups, and the distribution of credit usage across users. This page also provides deep-dive metrics highlighting specific usage and adoption trends for GitHub Copilot, such as the number of average chat requests, the number of chat requests by mode, and code completions.

These insights help to provide a unified view of AI spending and adoption across developer-specific groups, linking developer productivity to business outcomes. The insights can aid data-driven decision making on Copilot spending investments.

Note

Unlike the Microsoft 365 services pages, which displays the full month to date, on days 28-31 of the month, the GitHub page only represents data over the previous 28 days.

GitHub data prior to July 10, 2026, might be under-reported due to a source issue.

This page covers two main types of insights: Active GitHub Copilot users and Total AI credits usage, which is specific to credits used for GitHub Copilot. Learn more about the definitions of these metrics and other Copilot metrics. To dive deeper into GitHub Copilot usage trends at the feature level, under Active GitHub Copilot users, select View details.

Let's take a closer look at the insights provided by this page.

Insight #1: Usage trend

A graph shows the change in total credits consumed from month to date. Select Metric to toggle between the trends for credits used (month to date), credits used (daily), active users, or average credits used per user. You can select any data point on the graph to see more details for that point in time. Below the graph you'll find adoption trends for specific groups.

Select View by to drill down into different groups. To add more groups, select the eye icon under Show trend. To protect individual privacy, metrics aren't shown for groups that are smaller than the minimum group size.

You can sort the table by the headers. For example, to sort by the metric value, select Metric. To sort by the group names alphabetically, select View by.

Insight #2: Usage intensity

This card shows the distribution of credits used for GitHub Copilot across user segments based on their usage intensity. For each segment, you can see the total credits used, average credits used per user, and the number of active users in that segment.

Insight #3: GitHub Copilot usage

This page provides a variety of deep-dive insights into how developers are actively using GitHub Copilot at the feature level, including breakdowns into chat mode, model, and coding language used.

The top of the page includes metrics for the number of Active GitHub Copilot users and Agent adoption month to date. Learn more about the definitions of these metrics The top of the page also highlights the most used chat mode, model, and language.

Chat requests

This section of the page includes two graphs that show the average number of chat requests per active user over the previous 28 days, and the number of chat requests by mode month to date. Chat requests include any interaction with GitHub Copilot, including generating code, asking a question, or triggering a response.

Code completions

This section of the page includes a graph that shows the number of code completions over the previous 28 days, for both suggested completions and accepted completions. It also highlights the percentage of code completions that were fully or partially accepted. Code completions capture all autocomplete-style suggestions generated inline by GitHub Copilot.

Usage breakdown

This section of the page uses several graphs to show the breakdown of model, language, and chat mode usage for GitHub Copilot. Select Chat mode, Model, or Language to filter the insights by those features.

Note

To be excluded from analysis in the Consumption Dashboard, users can ask their tenant admin to add them to the exclusion list. Learn more.
