Issue with Remote Desktop Connection Windows 10/11: Credentials Didn't Work

I acquired a refurbished computer with Windows 10 and a pre-configured local user account. I added my Microsoft account through netplwiz, granted it administrator rights, deleted the existing local account, and set up the remote desktop connection.

When trying to access the computer from another device on the same local area network using the same Microsoft account, I get an error message saying, "The credentials didn't work. The credentials used to connect to DESKTOP-******* didn't work. Enter new credentials / Can't sign in."

After reading several forum posts with similar issues, I tried:

  • Carefully verifying the credentials
  • Installing updates
  • Disabling Windows Hello sign-in
  • Deleting all passwords from the Credential Manager and re-adding them
  • Disabling the firewall
  • Upgrading from Windows 10 to 11

I have another computer on the same network using the same account, and I'm able to access it remotely without any problems using the same credentials.

    Hello Luis Ramirez,

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A!

It sounds like you’ve already tried a lot of troubleshooting steps! Here are a few additional things you might consider:

    1. Please check the username format as sometimes, the format of the username can cause issues. Try using the format .\username or ComputerName\username when entering your credentials.
    2. Modify the local group policy to allow delegating saved credentials with NTLM-only server authentication. You can do this by running gpedit.msc, then navigating to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Credentials Delegation
    3. Edit the Windows Security Policy to allow remote logins. Go to Local Security Policy > Local Policies > User Rights Assignment, and ensure that “Allow log on through Remote Desktop Services” includes your user account.
    4. Try changing the local user's password then try again.

I hope the information provided solves the problem, I will be waiting for your response.

    Best Regards,

    Gao.
