Upcoming Update for Windows Update

Hi All,

Please be aware that beginning next month, we will start an upgrade to the Windows Update and Microsoft Update services. As a part of the service upgrade, an update to the Windows Update and Automatic Updates client code will be required. We will start this infrastructure update in late August, and it will take a couple of months to complete the rollout. Updates to the services and Windows code are required from time to time to maintain and improve service quality, reliability, and operations. The last update occurred in November of 2008.

This update will not change your current Windows Update or Automatic Updates settings. It will improve the user interface for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 computers running Windows Update, adding a more visible and detailed description of updates as well as improvements in how users are notified about service packs. This update will not change the look and feel of Automatic Updates.

The Windows Update or Automatic Updates client software must be updated, or you may not be able to successfully check for updates or perform other configured actions. If Windows Update or Automatic Updates is enabled to automatically check for updates, download updates, or install updates on your computer then the infrastructure update will be downloaded and installed automatically. Your computer will not be updated if you have disabled Windows Update (or Automatic Updates) and do not check for updates.

This infrastructure update is being provided in the same way as previous infrastructure updates. For more information about infrastructure updates and the last infrastructure update, please refer to last year’s infrastructure update post.

How might the change affect users of System Center Configuration Manager / WSUS integrations?

How will this be managed for users of WSUS? What options need to be set in order for the agent to be automatically updated? Also, what is the new version number of the updated agent? We are running with 7.1.6001.65 in our environment and began planning an upgrade to 7.2.6001.788. Will this replace with a later version and do away with the need to upgrade?

The only complaint I have in the Windows Update UI for Vista/Windows 7 is you can't select more than one update using Ctrl+click and select/deselect/hide/show them. It's either all or none. And the MUI Language packs constantly reappear even if I choose to hide them, so I have to hide them all over again one by one.

I have a number of questions that I have would like to kmow  if you can shed some light. Will this update also include any imporovements for hotpatching? Also as will error messaging be improved? There any many times with failures where even after clicking for more information I still dont know how to fix the issue. Will you blog when the rollout starts and when the new release notes are added to the KB artical 949104? Lastly is this the version of the client that will inlcuded with WSUS 3 SP 2?

Hello, I would also like to know what the version number of the updated agent will be. Also, if you could please post the date that it will be available, that would be great... much easier than me having to check every day :) Thanks, Frank

Being a regular consumer user (of Vista), there is one thing about the update procedure that bugs me, and I wonder if that will be changed in this update: If a reboot is required after installing updates, please give me a "do not remind me"-option, or an option with a bigger delay than 4 hours (8 or 12 hours would be nice). I will shutdown the machine eventually, the tray icon is enough to remind me that I installed updates.
