Un'estensione del formato di descrizione del servizio estende la modalità di generazione di una descrizione del servizio per un servizio Web XML creato tramite ASP.NET. In particolare, un'estensione del formato di descrizione del servizio aggiunge elementi XML alla descrizione del servizio. Ciò è utile quando viene compilata un'estensione SOAP per l'esecuzione sia sul lato client che sul lato server di un servizio Web XML, poiché le informazioni sulle estensioni SOAP non vengono inserite nella descrizione del servizio. Se si aggiungono informazioni sull'estensione SOAP alla descrizione del servizio, un client può interpretare che deve eseguire l'estensione SOAP specifica. Un esempio di estensione SOAP la cui esecuzione è necessaria sia sul client che sul server è costituito da un'estensione SOAP di crittografia. Se un'estensione SOAP di crittografia viene eseguita solo sul server e crittografa i valori restituiti prima di inviarli al client, il client deve disporre dell'estensione SOAP in esecuzione per decrittografare il messaggio SOAP. In caso contrario, il client non può elaborare il valore restituito.

Per compilare un'estensione del formato di descrizione del servizio, seguire questa procedura:

1. Compilare una classe che deriva da ServiceDescriptionFormatExtension.

2. Applicare un XmlFormatExtensionAttribute oggetto alla classe e specificare i punti di estensione in cui deve essere eseguita l'estensione del formato della descrizione del servizio.

3. Facoltativamente, applicare un XmlFormatExtensionPointAttribute oggetto alla classe e specificare un membro all'interno della classe che funge da nuovo punto di estensione.

4. Facoltativamente, applicare un XmlFormatExtensionPrefixAttribute oggetto alla classe e specificare il prefisso dello spazio dei nomi XML da associare agli elementi XML generati dall'estensione del formato della descrizione del servizio.

5. Configurare l'estensione del formato della descrizione del servizio da eseguire all'interno della serviceDescriptionFormatExtensionTypes sezione del file di configurazione.
