Hello,

I am working on a custom HID lower filter driver for a Lenovo ThinkBook G6 IRL running Windows 11. The goal is to intercept touchpad HID reports at the hidclass.sys level so that I can scrub/modify input reports before they reach the OS cursor, while still keeping raw data available for my own application (libpointing integration).

I have created an INF file that installs successfully, and Device Manager shows the device as: My Precision Touchpad Filter (GXTP5100 HID).
Here is a simplified version of the INF:
[Version]

Signature = "$WINDOWS NT$"

Class = HIDClass

ClassGuid = {745A17A0-74D3-11D0-B6FE-00A0C90F57DA}

Provider = %ManufacturerName%

DriverVer = 09/16/2025,1.0.0.5

CatalogFile = MyFilter.cat

[Manufacturer]

%ManufacturerName%=Std,NTamd64

[Std.NTamd64]

%MyFilter.DeviceDesc%=MyFilter_Install, HID\VEN_GXTP&DEV_5100&Col02

%MyFilter.DeviceDesc%=MyFilter_Install, HID\GXTP5100&Col02

%MyFilter.DeviceDesc%=MyFilter_Install, HID*GXTP5100&Col02

[MyFilter_Install.NT]

Include = mshidkmdf.inf

Needs = MsHidKmdf_LowerFilter.NT

CopyFiles = MyFilter.CopyFiles

AddReg = MyFilter.AddReg

[MyFilter_Install.NT.Services]

Include = mshidkmdf.inf

Needs = MsHidKmdf_LowerFilter.NT.Services

AddService = MyFilter,,MyFilter_Service_Inst

[MyFilter.AddReg]

HKR,,"LowerFilters",0x00010008,"MyFilter"

[MyFilter_Service_Inst]

DisplayName = %MyFilter.SvcDesc%

ServiceType = 1

StartType = 3

ErrorControl = 1

ServiceBinary = %12%\MyFilter.sys

The driver builds and signs correctly. Installation via pnputil /add-driver succeeds, and I can see the device listed with my custom description in Device Manager.

However, the LowerFilters entry never appears in the registry (Enum\HID...\LowerFilters), and DevCon shows “Controlling service: (none)”. Because of this, the filter does not attach, and the cursor suppression logic inside EvtReadReportComplete is never triggered.

I have tried:

Using mshidkmdf.inf with Include/Needs as recommended.

Adding LowerFilters via AddReg.

Rebooting after installation.

Verifying with Get-PnpDeviceProperty and registry queries.

Still, the filter driver never attaches.
Question: How can I ensure that my HID filter driver (MyFilter.sys) is correctly attached as a lower filter to the Precision Touchpad HID device, so that my EvtIoInternalDeviceControl and completion routines actually get called?

Any insight into why the LowerFilters registry value is not applied for this HID device (GXTP5100) would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!
