Hi,
To completely remove the stubborn Sony WF-1000XM5 from Windows and fix the connection errors you can try this:
Step 1: Standard Removal and Troubleshooting
First, ensure you have completed the basic removal steps and troubleshooting as a foundation.
- Remove from Settings: Go to Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices (or Devices in Windows 10). Find the WF-1000XM5 , click the three-dots (or select it and click Remove device), and confirm. This may still fail but it's the required first step.
- Restart Bluetooth Services:
- Press the Windows key + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - Find the Bluetooth Support Service, right-click it, and select Restart.
- Try removing the device in Settings again.
- Press the Windows key + R, type
- Run the Bluetooth Troubleshooter: Go to Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters (or Update & Security > Troubleshoot in Windows 10) and run the Bluetooth troubleshooter.
Step 2: Advanced Device Manager Cleanup
The core of the issue is likely lingering hidden device entries.
- Open Device Manager: Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.
- Show Hidden Devices: In the Device Manager window, click on the View menu at the top and select Show hidden devices. This will display greyed-out "ghost" entries.
- Uninstall all WF-1000XM5 entries:
- Expand the Bluetooth category. Right-click on every instance of your Sony WF-1000XM5 (both active and greyed-out hidden ones) and select Uninstall device.
- If a prompt appears asking to "Delete the driver software for this device", do not check the box for now, just click Uninstall or OK.
- Also check under the Sound, video and game controllers category for related entries and uninstall them too.
- Restart your computer immediately after uninstalling all entries. Windows will reinstall generic Bluetooth drivers upon reboot.
Step 3: Initialize the Earphones
To ensure the issue is not on the earphone side, initialize them to factory settings.
- Place the WF-1000XM5 units in the charging case and leave the lid open.
- Press and hold the reset/initialize button on the back of the charging case for about 20 seconds or more. The indicator light will flash orange for about 5 seconds, then turn off. Release your finger after the indicator turns off. The earphones are now initialized.
- For detailed instructions, refer to the Sony Help Guide for resetting/initializing the WF-1000XM5
Step 4: Re-pair the Device
After your PC restarts and the earphones are initialized:
- Go to Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Add device > Bluetooth.
- Put your WF-1000XM5 in pairing mode (the indicator should be flashing blue) and select it when it appears in the list.
Advanced Option: Registry Cleanup (If the issue persists)
If the device keeps reappearing and the pairing error continues, the issue is often caused by leftover Bluetooth registry entries, and removing them is something only advanced users should handle because incorrect edits can affect system stability; you can try opening the Registry Editor (Windows key + R > regedit > Enter > allow admin access), then stopping the Bluetooth Support Service (Windows key + R > services.msc > find the service > right-click > Stop), and once it’s stopped, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\BTHPORT\Parameters\Devices to look for folders with hexadecimal IDs and delete the one associated with your WF-1000XM5, then check HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\BTHENUM and ...\BTH for any related entries and remove them if confirmed, after which you can restart the Bluetooth Support Service, reboot your computer, and try pairing again as described earlier.
