FAQ for Microsoft Rights Management Sharing Application

for Mobile and Mac Platforms

This page provides answers to frequently asked questions about the Microsoft Rights Management sharing application for mobile and Mac platforms.

What can I do with the RMS sharing application?

This cool app allows you to protect pictures with an RMS policy before you share them. This app also allows you to open RMS-protected PDF files, pictures, text files, and any other file format protected as a .pfile.

How do I sign in to this app?

If your company already has AD RMS on-premises (with Mobile Device Extension) or Azure RMS, you can use your credentials to sign in. If not, you can sign up for a free new account at https://portal.aadrm.com.

Can I sign up with my personal email address, such as a Hotmail or Gmail account?

Not yet. Today, you can sign up only with your business email address. We’re working on support for personal email addresses and will update this entry when it’s available.

Which file extensions can I open with this app?

You can open .ppdf, .pjpg, .ptxt, and several other text and image file formats.

Can I protect files that are not images?

On mobile platforms, you can protect only photos. You can protect other types of files only when using the RMS sharing application for Windows.

When I protect a picture, it creates a PJPG file. What’s that?

A PJPG (or PJPEG) file is a digital photographic image that has been protected with an RMS policy. Only the users with whom you share the file can open it using the RMS sharing application, according to the rights defined in the policy.

I can choose only from a company template. Can’t I use my own custom permissions?

The Custom Permissions option is coming soon and will let you apply your own permissions.

Why do I have to consent before viewing a protected .pfile?

Consent is required to validate that you are aware of the following:

  • The owner of the document expects you to honor the rights.
  • Opening this content in a third-party application will be audited.
