if you’re locked out of the Azure Portal due to MFA, it can feel like there’s no way forward. But there are recovery paths depending on whether you signed up with:
- A personal Microsoft Account (MSA) (like Outlook.com, Hotmail.com, Live.com, or a personal email), or
- An organizational / work / school account managed through Azure AD / Entra ID.
Because you said that it was a**"Personal Account"**, so I think these steps may help you:
Step 1: Try the Microsoft Account Recovery page
Go here: https://account.live.com/proofs/manage or directly: https://account.live.com/acsr
- Sign in with your email address.
- If the Authenticator push notification isn’t arriving, choose “Use a different verification option” and select the 6-digit code method.
- If you only have Authenticator as a method, you’ll need to go through account recovery.
Step 2: Reset your Microsoft Authenticator
If you still have access to your 6-digit code option in Authenticator (the TOTP codes), you should be able to log in using that. The push notification isn’t mandatory if the code works.
- On the login screen, pick “I can’t use my Microsoft Authenticator app right now” → Use a verification code from my mobile app.
- Open the Authenticator app and enter the 6-digit code shown under your account.
Step 3: If you lost access to Authenticator & don’t have backups
- Use Microsoft Account recovery form.
- Fill it out with as much info as possible (old passwords, subject lines from emails, Xbox gamertag if you had one, billing details, etc.).
- It can take 24–48h and Microsoft may email you at your recovery address.
Step 4: Getting back into Azure
Once you can sign in again:
- Go to https://portal.azure.com.
- Under your account’s Security Info (My Account → Security info → MFA), add at least 2 backup methods (Authenticator + SMS + email) so this doesn’t happen again.
=> Important note: If your Azure subscription is tied only to this MSA, Microsoft Support will require you to first regain access to the Microsoft Account itself. They cannot bypass MFA for security reasons.
