OneDrive Text File Access Limitation in Copilot

I’m writing to follow up on a request I submitted approximately three weeks ago regarding Copilot’s inability to access the contents of text files (.txt or/and .docx) stored in OneDrive — even when those files are shared via link or stored under my signed-in Microsoft account.

This limitation continues to significantly reduce Copilot’s usefulness in document-based workflows, especially for writers and editors. As a novelist, I rely on Copilot to assist with structure, consistency, and creative refinement. However, without access to the full manuscript, Copilot cannot analyze previous chapters, track character development, or maintain narrative continuity. This forces me to work in fragmented pieces, which is inefficient and prone to contradictions.

I’ve tested the issue again using a shared OneDrive link to a .txt file. Copilot still cannot read or summarize the content, nor does it prompt for permission or offer any workaround. The behavior remains unchanged:

·         Copilot can list filenames but not access file contents

·         No error message is shown

·         No prompt for authorization appears

·         I am signed in to my Microsoft account and OneDrive is fully synchronized

I kindly ask whether any improvements are planned in this area, and whether Copilot will soon be able to read and analyze shared OneDrive documents. This feature would be a major step forward for writers, researchers, and anyone working with long-form content.

Thank you again for your attention and support.

Best regards.

Thank you for posting your question in Microsoft Q&A Forum.

I’m sorry to hear your experience and appreciate your suggestions

As Forum Moderators, we do not have the authority to directly assist with the specific request or ticket you submitted regarding Copilot’s access to OneDrive file contents. For follow-up on that request, we kindly suggest returning to the original submission and adding a comment to continue the conversation with the appropriate support team.

However, if you’re looking for a workaround, I’d be happy to suggest an alternative approach using Copilot in OneDrive: Get started with Copilot in OneDrive - Microsoft Support. While Copilot cannot access file contents via shared links or directly from your account, you can still benefit from its capabilities by:

    • Opening the file directly in OneDrive web (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF).
    • Using Copilot features to: Summarize long documents, generate insights or action items, ask questions about the content,...

This method ensures that Copilot can interact with the file securely and effectively, as long as it’s opened within a supported Microsoft 365 app.

We truly appreciate you're understanding and your continued engagement with Microsoft Q&A. If you have any further questions or need help navigating the workaround, feel free to let us know.

Thank you so much for your understanding.
