Windows 11, version 25H2 known issues and notifications

Current status as of May 15, 2025

Windows 11, version 25H2 is now available for all eligible devices. Devices running Home and Pro editions of Windows 11 that are not managed by IT departments will receive the update to Windows 11, version 25H2 through the machine learning-based intelligent rollout.

Updates are delivered when devices are ready, helping keep devices running smoothly and securely while ensuring they stay up to date with the latest protections. You can choose when to restart or postpone the update, and no action is required to receive it.

If you have an eligible Windows 10 or Windows 11 device, and you don’t want to wait for the intelligent rollout, go to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. If your device is ready for the update, you’ll see the option to Download and install Windows 11, version 25H2.

After installing the May 2026 Windows security update (KB5089549), some devices might experience installation failures with error code 0x800f0922. This issue affects devices with limited free space on the EFI System Partition (ESP), especially when the device has 10 MB or less space available. On affected devices, the installation might proceed through the initial phases but fail during the reboot phase at approximately 35–36% completion. The installation then rolls back with error code, and users might see the message: “Something didn’t go as planned. Undoing changes.”

Resulting from this issue, users may observe log entries similar to the following in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log, indicating insufficient free space on the EFI System Partition:

  • ​“SpaceCheck: Insufficient free space”
  • ​“ServicingBootFiles failed. Error = 0x70”
  • ​“SpaceCheck: <value> used by third-party/OEM files outside of Microsoft boot directories”

Workaround: Affected customers might apply one of the following workarounds to mitigate the issue:

1. Allow update installation by modifying ESP registry setting

⚠️ Important: Editing the registry incorrectly can cause system issues. Always back up the registry before making changes.

  • ​Open Command Prompt as Administrator
  • ​Run the following command:
  • ​reg add “HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Bfsvc /v EspPaddingPercent /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f”
  • ​Restart the affected device to apply the change and then retry installing the update. 

2. Mitigate through Known Issue Rollback (KIR)

        This issue is mitigated using Known Issue Rollback (KIR). The resolution has already propagated automatically to consumer devices and non-managed business devices. Restarting your Windows device might help the resolution apply to your device faster.

        For enterprise-managed devices where Windows updates are managed by IT departments, IT administrators can apply the KIR by installing and configuring the Group policy listed below. The special Group Policy can be found in Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > <Group Policy name listed below>.

        

        Group Policy downloads with Group Policy name:

        Important: You will need to install and configure the Group Policy for your version of Windows to resolve this issue. You will also need to restart your device(s) to apply the group policy setting. Note that the Group Policy will temporarily disable the change causing this issue.
