VM Failing to Start Due to Allocation Failure – Need Guidance

Hi everyone,

I'm experiencing an issue trying to start a Linux-based VM on Azure, and I’d appreciate any help or insight from the community.

Context:

The VM is deployed in the East US region (specific zone not disclosed).

It uses a Premium SSD OS disk, around 512 GB in size.

The VM size is in the D8ads_v6 family.

The error message indicates an allocation failure due to insufficient capacity for this VM size in the current zone.

What I’ve tried:

Verified that the disk is healthy and still attached to the VM (via az disk show).

Attempted to retrieve usage metrics with az monitor metrics list, but no data was returned.

From what I can tell, the issue is related to Azure host capacity, not to the VM configuration or OS.

What I’m looking for:

Suggestions on alternative VM sizes that are more likely to have availability in East US (or guidance on finding that info).

Best practices to safely resize or redeploy the VM without losing data.

Tips from anyone who has faced similar capacity issues and resolved them.

Are you still facing the issue

Look for sizes in the same family (D-series) or consider other like E-series or F-series, which may offer similar performance characteristics.
