Crashes with DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE and VIDEO_DXGKRNL_FATAL_ERROR on NVIDIA RTX 4050 using DaVinci Resolve

Hello everyone,

I am experiencing serious stability issues on my Dell G15 5530 laptop equipped with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4050 Laptop GPU while using DaVinci Resolve Studio (version 20.x) on Windows 11 24H2. The crashes result in blue screen errors showing DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE and VIDEO_DXGKRNL_FATAL_ERROR, linked to the dxgkrnl.sys and watchdog.sys drivers.

Technical context

I am running Windows 11 version 24H2 and have installed the latest NVIDIA Studio drivers (566.36, 572.60, and 581.57) via clean install with DDU.

Crashes occur both in CUDA and OpenCL modes in DaVinci Resolve.

BIOS and chipset drivers are fully updated via Dell's official website.

Stress tests on GPU with FurMark showed no artifacting or excess overheating.

Extensive memory tests with MemTest86 revealed no errors.

The integrated GPU was temporarily disabled to use only the RTX 4050 dedicated GPU.

Continuous monitoring of temperatures and hardware load under normal and heavy workloads.

This set of issues prevents me from using GPU acceleration in DaVinci Resolve, severely impacting my workflow. I am posting here seeking help and insights from others who have encountered similar failures linked to dxgkrnl.sys and watchdog.sys on RTX 4050 within a Dell G15 5530 setup.

Hi ,

Well, apparently your laptop has a mux switch. You can check in the device manager in the display adapters or graphics adapters tab. Does it only have Nvidia or does it have Intel and Nvidia?

Hi ,

Well according to your data the error was not with the nvidia driver but with the directx driver. Do you know how to see if you have the MUX switch in the bios?
