Contains legacy settings for the Start tile layout on mobile devices.

Note  Do not use these settings if you are using the new LayoutModification.xml schema to configure the Start screen. Use Start > StartLayout and Start > StartLayoutFilePath instead.

Start tile layout

Follow the guidance in this Microsoft Web site to configure the legacy Start customization for mobile devices.

Windows 10 contains a mechanism that translates the legacy Start settings into a layout that works on Windows 10 Mobile. OEMs who decide to use the legacy registry key default layout method must set the following registry subkey so that the system will use the legacy path rather than the XML provisioning method:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Shell\OEM\Start\LegacyDefaultLayout

The subkey is a REG_DWORD which accepts the following values:

Value Description

0x0

Do not use the legacy mobile Start layout.

0x1

Use the legacy registry-key based mobile Start layout.

If you set the value to 0x1, or specify that the legacy method should be used, the Start functionality is limited to the legacy methods and templates available in Windows Phone 8.1. This includes support for:

  • Featured tiles
  • Stub apps
  • Folders
  • Multivariant configurations
  • Available Start layout templates in Windows Phone 8.1
