FIM 2010 R2 Supported Reporting Topologies

Insert introduction here.

FIM 2010 R2 Supported Reporting Topologies

There are two supported topologies for FIM 2010 R2 Reporting. These vary depending on the size of the organization and the amount of reporting data required by the organization.

Small to Medium Deployments

  • The SCSM Manager and SQL can be virtualized and hosted on the Data Warehouse Server using Hyper-V.

  • Data Warehouse server should have a minimum of 16GB of RAM and 32GB recommended.

A small to medium deployment of FIM 2010 R2 Reporting requires the use of 2 machines. These machines should have the required roles:

  • Machine 1 – The FIM 2010 R2 Service, the SCSM Management Server and SQL Server 2008 R2.

  • Machine 2 – The SCSM Data Warehouse and SQL Server 2008 R2.

To optimize performance, the SQL Server database for each component may also be installed on a separate server. SCSM Service and Data Warehouse service MUST exist on different windows instances. The SCSM Management Server database may be installed on a separate OR on the same SQL Server instance with the group of Data Warehouse databases (DWStagingAndConfig, DWRepository, DWDataMart). However, once installed they cannot be moved to another SQL Instance (they can be moved to different physical servers but the SQL Instance/Machine name must remain the same).  Consequently, for customers who intend to support FIM instances with over 50k users we recommend that they install the SCSM Management Server database on a separate SQL instance from the Data Warehouse databases (DWStagingAndConfig, DWRepository, DWDataMart).

Warning

If you deploy with the small to medium configuration you need to be aware of the limitation of SCSM and SCDW databases. That is, once deployed, the name of the SQL instance cannot be changed. SCSM does not support moving the SM database nor do they support moving the DW database to a separate SQL instance. Consequently if you need to scale out from a small to medium deployment, you can only do this by moving the FIMService database to a separate SQL instance. For additional information see Disaster Recovery Scenarios Overview.

Large Deployments

  • Use when you have high average request volume (>2,000 / hour)

  • Data Warehouse server should have a minimum of 32GB of RAM.

A large deployment of FIM 2010 R2 Reporting requires the use of 3 machines. These machines should have the required roles:

  • Machine 1 – The FIM 2010 R2 Service.

  • Machine 2 - The SCSM Management Server and SQL Server 2008 R2.

  • Machine 3 – The SCSM Data Warehouse and SQL Server 2008 R2.
