Onedrive removed half of my desktop files, all my "pictures" and "videos" files

I have never been a fan of cloud storage. I store and back-up everything myselfo multiple PCs and I have never cared for synchronizing with OneDrive. In fact, first order of business was to delete OneDrive when I first started my PCs. I have tried OneDrive and i do not want to use it.

Unfortunatly I had to use OneDrive for university, and I hoped I could use it to a folder with university stuff between my main PC and a laptop. Well, OneDrive decided to sync my whole PC to the OneDrive UNI account and when I realized this I cut all OneDrive access. What happened next was me watching in horror as half of my desktop icons just disappeared. Apparently OneDrive had decided that since everything was synced, I did not need my files to be stored on the physichal PC, just in the cloud, and once I cut the connection to the cloud, I could not acces my files since they had been moved to the cloud.

How can I stop OneDrive from deleting my files when I use it? Some pictures were not backed up by me, are they in the cloud now? It will be such a pain to restore my PC ans all my sdesktop shortcuts to how they were.

I only wanted to sync ONE folder and it took everything???

I actually am so frustrated that it is hard npt to use foul language and I am genuinely reconsidering if Microsoft Windows is the OS I want to use in the coming future, or if I want to transition to something else like Linux or even Mac. Really disappointed with how microsoft pushes OneDrive and microsoft accounts.

Was OneDrive removed from this system or is it currently installed?

You can turn off backing up the libraries I.E. desktop/documents/ photos and videos libraries to onedrive which will resolve this issue.
