I'm trying to sign in to my email using two-step verification. I receive the code sent to my email, but when it asks for the code on my phone, it says that this verification method is not available

Hello,

I don’t remember the password to my Hotmail account. Since two-step verification is enabled, I’m trying to receive codes both via email and phone. While I do receive the code by email, when I request the code to be sent to my phone, I get a message saying: “This verification method is currently unavailable. Please try another method.”

Both my phone number and alternate email addresses are correct. I have already tried using Microsoft Edge in incognito mode with mobile data to request the code, as suggested, but still no result.

Microsoft should not be leaving its users in this kind of situation. I waited the second 24-hour period before trying again, but now I’m even afraid to attempt another login. If the code doesn’t arrive again, I fear my repeated attempts will result in the account getting permanently locked.

I haven’t received any real support from Microsoft, and I don’t know how long I’m supposed to wait or what else I can do. Please, make sure the solutions you recommend actually address the problem. I cannot access important emails in my account, and this situation is causing serious inconvenience.

I hope you can understand my frustration and kindly provide a realistic and effective solution.

Best regards,

    Hi Nuray,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A forum. I understand how frustrating it must be to be locked out of your Hotmail account. Here's what you can do now:

    1. Wait Before Trying Again

Avoid repeated login attempts for at least 24–72 hours. Continued attempts may extend the restriction or trigger a lockout.

    1. Use a Different Verification Method

Since you’re still able to receive codes via email, use that method exclusively for now. If prompted for a second method, and it’s unavailable, wait until the restriction on your phone number is lifted.

    1. Try a Different Network or Device

Sometimes switching to a different internet connection (e.g., mobile data instead of Wi-Fi) or using InPrivate/Incognito mode in your browser can help bypass temporary restrictions

    1. Use Microsoft’s Account Recovery Form

If you’re unable to access your account after waiting:

    • Go to https://account.live.com/acsr
    • Fill out the recovery form with as much detail as possible
    • Use an alternate email address where Microsoft can contact you
    1. Check Microsoft’s Troubleshooter

You can also try Microsoft’s official verification code troubleshooter for additional guidance

    Note:

    • Do not attempt to reset your password or log in repeatedly during the restriction period.
    • Make sure your recovery email and phone number are up to date once you regain access.

If the issue persists, please let me know. I’ll be happy to guide you further or escalate the issue if needed.
