Why does pressing the spacebar in Word, when I type LaTeX format such as \mathbb{R}, not do anything?

Are you typing in Word’s Equation editor or plain text? Word only converts LaTeX like \mathbb{R} inside Insert > Equation (or Alt + =). In plain text, it stays as text and space won’t work.
