Word page numbering severe inconsistency

I am having an issue with Word in which my page numbers reach a maximum and then continue to count past it. Specifically, my document is 74 pages long, but the document acts as though page 38 is the maximum. For example, I have page numbers "page 38 of 38", "page 39 of 38", "page40 of 38", et cetera. On page 38, there are no section breaks. I have tried "continue from previous section" in the page number formatting. To make things worse, when I do eventually have a section break, Word continues to count pages, but alters the "of ___" number. For example, we have "page 43 of 38", "page 44 of 4", "page 45 of 4", and so on, in that order. Despite many other section breaks after page 44, the document continues with the "of 4" until page 56, at which point the page numbers stop entirely.

Can anyone help me fix this mess of page numbers? I've tried deleting them and bringing them back in, and even pasting the entire text into a new Word doc, to no avail.
