I'm trying to run my macros and getting message "Microsoft has blocked macros from running because the source of this file is untrusted."

I'm using Word 2021 standalone version, not signed into any account

When I create a new blank file, I get this:

If I open an existing file, even one that CONTAINS NO MACROS, I get this:

When I click Options..., I get this nonsensical dialog:

So my choices are to have Microsoft "protect" me or to have Microsoft "protect" me. I get no option to make it a trusted document. I have added the documents folder and all subfolders to the trusted documents list.

I also have my macros settings set to this (and yes, I know I shouldn't, BUT THAT IS MY CHOICE—or at least it used to be!):

The worst part is that I have this set to NOT UPDATE, and yet SOMEHOW, Microsoft has altered this behavior.

This is simply INEXCUSABLE BEHAVIOR.

Oh, and the file has no unblock option either:

Because the issue appears when you create a new blank document from the Normal.dotm template (that's the default template if you don't specify another template) and the "Security Alert" message identifies Normal.dotm as the untrusted file, that template is most likely the cause of all the trouble.

The first step is to make sure that the folder C:\Users\Rodney\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates is a trusted location, which it should be by default. In Word, go to File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings > Trusted Locations and look for a line whose description says "Word default location: User Templates". If that line doesn't exist, click the Add New Location button and enter that path. Then shut down and restart Word, and test whether the problem is fixed.

If there's still a problem, then with Word shut down, go to that folder in Windows Explorer. (The AppData folder and everything under it is hidden, so the quick way to get there is to type in the environment variable %appdata% that automatically expands to the first part up to and including Roaming, and then add the \Microsoft\Templates part.) Single-click the Normal.dotm file and rename it to OldNormal.dotm. (By renaming rather than deleting the file, you can access it later to copy any customizations that you want to keep.) When you next restart Word, the program will create a new Normal.dotm template with only the default properties.

Well, renaming normal.dotm and letting it create a new one seems to have solved the problem. I copied the macros back into the new normal.dotm, and it seems to work fine.

My breathless ranting seems a little over the top now...

    Thanks for the help!
