Word - splitting 4 docs across 2 monitors

Hello,

I would like to view and work on 4 documents split across 2 screens.

I will be copying and pasting sections from Docs A and B (English and French) into the new Docs C and D.

I need to split one screen with Docs A and B and the second screen with Docs C and D.

I tried opening Word in 2 separate windows but it will only split 2 docs at a time. This happens even if I drag the second window over to the second monitor.

Your help is greatly appreciated!

If you're trying to use the Split button on the View ribbon, that won't ever work -- that function can only split a single document into two windows that show different parts of one document.

Instead:

  • Open documents A and B on one screen.
  • With the cursor in document A, hold the Windows key while you press and release the left arrow key. That positions the document in the left half of the screen.
  • When you release the Windows key, small versions of the other open documents appear in the right half of the screen. Click document B, which expands to take the right half of the screen.
  • Drag document C to the other screen. Repeat the Windows key/left arrow/right arrow process to display documents C and D in the left and right halves of the second screen.

    Dear Marilyn Klassen Magnusson,

Good day! Thank you for posting to Microsoft Community. We are happy to help you.

As per your description, it seems that you are having concern with splitting documents and work on 4 documents that split across 2 screens.

To help you better, we would like to collect more detailed information you're experiencing so that we can have a further investigation:

    1. We'd like to confirm if you are trying to split using the in-box feature in Word? Generally, this can help split the document into two windows to show different parts of one document. For your reference: Video: View files in split and multiple windows - Microsoft Support
    2. Would you please provide some screenshots of "I tried opening Word in 2 separate windows but it will only split 2 docs at a time." with us?
    3. Please also share your operating system version and Office version by navigating to Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall a program, please capture a screenshot of your Office, as shown below: Image

Meanwhile, we've done a quick test with Word version 2410, open all the 4 documents, and click on arrange all to have all documents opened in one monitor, move A and B on one screen, move C and D on the other screen, and then arrange the window of each document manually as a workaround.

Below is the screenshot of arrange all on our side:

Welcome to post back when you have any update, we will continue doing best to assist you.

If the understanding above is not consistent with yours, please feel free to post back and point that.

Your understanding and patience will be highly appreciated. We hope that you are keeping safe and well!

    Sincerely,
