You can try creating a new user account in System Settings>Users & Groups. Then sign in to that account and see if the problem persists. If it is solved, then there is an issue with the Microsoft files stored in your normal user account. If the problem continues, then you should uninstall Office following these steps: Uninstall Office for Mac Then reinstall from the Services & subscriptions page of your Microsoft account.

Hello, Margaret McDonald1

Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I realize that you have encountered a problem with copying and pasting in Word documents on Mac. I understand how you feel.

Here are some steps you can try:

1. Update Word.

Open Word > click Word in the upper-left corner > n the top menu, select Help> Check for Updates.

  1. Please try to create a new Mac user.

After creating a new Mac user, log in to your Mac computer with this new Mac user and see if the same issue persists in Word.

Additionally, due to limited information and various possible reasons for the problem, we may require more detailed information from you.

  • Which Office product do you have?   For example: Microsoft 365 Personal subscription? Microsoft 365 Family subscription?
  • Your Office version. Open Word > click Word in the upper-left corner > click About Word. There may be a compatibility issue.
  • When you copy and paste, do you use the keyboard shortcuts (Command + C/V)? Or do you right-click with the mouse and select “Copy” and “Paste”? Neither method works for copying and pasting?

Please understand that our initial response may not always solve the problem immediately. Feel free to post back if you need further assistance. Let's take it step by step.

Best wishes,

Lucia Wu - MSFT | Microsoft Community Support Specialist

I'm guessing that the actual issue is that dragging to select is what is failing, thus preventing you from copying. If that's the case, lack of updates is the most likely cause — especially since you've adopted Sequoia.

Assuming my interpretation is correct, please see this existing thread as well as the link provided within it: Select Text

If I'm wrong, please provide a more detailed description of the problem as well as indicating the specific Version Numbers of both macOS & Office.
