Problem with Word Options - can't click on OK - get error message

If I'm in the options section (of Word or Excel) and go to Save and then press ok I get this message:

"The server drafts location for offline editing you entered is not valid or you do not have permission to access that location. Specify a location on your local computer."

How do I know what application they are stored in? Can't seem to find it anywhere. I try to type in a location (My Documents) but it doesn't allow me to type anything in. Says I have to copy the location and I guess paste it but I don't know where it is!!

Exit Word first of all. In the registry editor, you can create a string value from the right-click (context) menu, for example. Change the name to Location.

Double-click the string so that you can change its value (= the path in this case). Specify the path for an existing location, such as *C:*.

See if the screen shot at https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/all/server-drafts-location-is-blank-and-wont-let-me/672dc341-e96e-4668-aa9e-53beb9048a0d helps shed some more light on what you need to do.

    Dear BonnieLee3

Thanks for raising your concerns in Microsoft Community.

Based on your description, I understand that you are having trouble saving files in Office. I understand how you feel and this problem is indeed frustrating.

Usually this error message is related to the [Server Draft Location] set in Office. We can first try to manually repair this option: Open any Office component, go to [Options] > [Save] tab, select [Offline editing options for document management server files], set [Server draft location], you can try to add a local path.

If the setting cannot be modified, or the problem persists after changing the path, we can try to modify the path in the registry:

    • Click [Start] > Select [Run] > Enter [regedit].
    • Navigate to the following path: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\Common\Offline\Options
    • Select [Options], create a new [String Value] on the right, rename it to [Location], double-click to open, and set a folder path as its value, or do not set any value for the time being.
    • Then check whether the Office application can be restored to normal.

Disclaimer: Generally, modifying registry subkeys or work group is intended for advanced users, administrators, and IT Professionals. It can help fix some problems, however, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For further protection, back up the registry before you modify it.

Since this path is usually related to the server, I need to confirm with you what the specific version of Office is. Can you take a screenshot of the [Account] interface and share it with us through your reply?

I hope the above information is helpful to you. We are looking forward to hearing from you and will continue to assist you.

    Best Regards,

    Dear BonnieLee3

    Thank you for your reply.

After creating the string, double-click it and enter a folder path in the window that appears, such as [C:\folder], or leave it blank and check the Word status later.

    What is the current problem?

Didn't work - I tried changing the setting in the registry - you said "create a new String Value" on the right, rename it to (Location). Set a folder path - how do I do that???? What is a string value and what location should I use?
