Trying to paste photo in document, only a few lines appear

I am working on MS 365, with a 15-year old file that includes two anchored photos linked to captions in text boxes. I try to insert a thumbnail photo and I get two rows of page-length image. I can't replace the existing anchored photos. I can remove them but I can't insert anything where they are. The text boxes jump around when I try to move them. I tried to paste a screenshot but it "failed to upload." Sorry if this isn't enough information. Thanks for reading.

If what you see is the bottom of the picture, the usual reason is that it's in a paragraph whose line spacing is set to an "Exactly" value.

Right-click the paragraph and choose Paragraph in the menu. Change the line spacing dropdown from Exactly to At Least.

Images that move around are usually set to one of the "floating" text wrapping types. To stabilize them, either change the wrapping to In Line with Text or put them into table cells (and turn off the table borders).
