My purchase of office 365 for windows came with McAfee. Do I need it given that Defender is included?

No, you do not need McAfee at all. Windows Security and Microsoft Defender are sufficient.

Never installed it. First of all, because Defender is included and has never let me down yet, I see no need for McAfee.

Secondly, although I bought Office365 without auto renewal, McAfee was bundled with auto renewal. As I did not install it, I don't have to worry about getting hit for a full price renewal in a year's time.

The third thing to watch is that my Office subscription was for 15 months, but McAfee is for only 12 months. If anyone installed McAfee, do put in a reminder for around 11 months for the renewal or to cancel This disparity in renewal dates is probably going to catch a few people out.

Try uninstalling all traces of McAfee.
