I want to switch from Microsoft 365 Personal to a Standard business subscription, how do I do this, and will I be refunded for the unused period of my personal subscription?

I need to be able to record on ms teams and so it seems I must switch from personal to business standard (I want desktop functionality). I pay my subscription annually in September so would like to know I will be refunded for the remainder of the personal term when I make the switch. I would like to do so asap but need help with the process to ensure all my existing office docs and emails etc are still available in the current format I have them.

Indeed, Teams for personal doesn't have recording feature as of today, but it is a feature that product team is working on, there is just no public information regarding when it is available. Microsoft's personal and business products are two completely separate ecosystems. You do have to cancel the personal and buy the business plan.

When you cancel a subscription, typically it will remain available to you until next renewal date, prorated refund is only available in the following countries: Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Israel, Korea, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal or Turkey,

Also, switching to business plan means you will be using a separate email address as it is a separate ecosystem. This email address is either your own custom domain business address, or you can use Microsoft's default domain, which ends with onmicrosoft.com. You cannot use your current Microsoft account. This can be a downer for many. So I want to point that out in case it is an important factor.

Considering all of the above, I wonder if you would instead consider using your device's screen recording feature for now until the recording feature is available for Teams personal. For example, if you are using Windows, you have two screen recording options:

  1. Snipping Tool - Windows +Shift +S keys to launch, and then use the video icon.
  2. Game bar - Win+G keys to launch. Click on the camera icon, and then click on the record button after that.

    Thank you so much Emily, this is very helpful. I am glad to hear that this will eventually be addressed within the personal subscription option. In the meanwhile, I have decided that it is easiest to use the MS Teams Essentials on a month-to-month basis.
