Your subscription does not have access to create a server in the selected region

I am brand new to Azure and recently set up a free account. All I really want is a small SQL Server database that I can use to store data for my own personal C# application for personal use.

I started to follow the tutorial on how to create a single database and I got as far as creating a server. I entered the server name and selected (US) East US as the location.

Then I got a little overwhelmed coming up with names for the various options so I started again. And now when I try to create the server, I see this error message:

"Your subscription does not have access to create a server in the selected region. For the latest information about region availability for your subscription, go to aka.ms/sqlcapacity. Please try another region or create a support ticket to request access."

I've searched, but all I can find is that I need to submit a support request to increase the quota - which doesn't work because my free subscription will not allow me to increase the quota and I'm pretty sure that's not even what I want, since I only need ONE database.

So I am basically stuck and I can't seem to find any way to get help. I feel like I must have somehow gotten myself into a bad state by starting over, but I don't know how to get out of it now and I'm really annoyed and frustrated.

Please help.

Hm. That answer doesn't make a lot of sense to me, because as I mentioned, the first time I got to that page and selected (US) East US, it was just fine, and I did not get an error.

It was only when I tried again that the error came up.

Having said that, I guess there's no good reason why I can't use Central US. I don't need super high-speed and low latency. But the whole thing is just very confusing.

as I mentioned, the first time I got to that page and selected (US) East US, it was just fine, and I did not get an error.

When you first tried to create the SQL server in East US, Azure likely reserved space for it in the background.

But since you didn’t finish setting it up, that reserved space wasn’t fully used and Azure didn’t release it right away.

Because free-tier and student subscriptions have limited capacity in some regions, when you tried again, the region was already at its limit, so you got the “no access” error.

This is a temporary issue, not something you did wrong.

Try creating in another region.

If you want to deploy in East us, please follow the above steps.

Billing and subscription management support is available to all Azure customers.

Azure Program offerings (Azure Pass, Imagine, Azure for Students, MPN, BizSpark, BizSpark Plus, Microsoft for Startups / Sponsorship Offers, Visual Studio Subscriptions / MSDN) have access to a limited set of regions.

If your subscription is part of an Azure Program offering, and you would like to request access to any of the following regions, consider using an alternate region instead:

Australia Central, Australia Central 2, Australia SouthEast, Brazil SouthEast, Canada East, China East, China North, China North 2, France South, Germany North, Japan West, JIO India Central, JIO India West, Korea South, Norway West, South Africa West, South India, Switzerland West, UAE Central, UK West, US DoD Central, US DoD East, US Gov Arizona, US Gov Texas, West Central US, West India.

Your subscription might not have access to create a server in the selected region if your subscription hasn't been registered with the SQL resource provider (RP).

Please register your subscription with the SQL RP:

To deploy Azure SQL resources, register your subscription with the SQL resource provider (RP).

You can register your subscription using the Azure portal, the Azure CLI, or Azure PowerShell.

To register your subscription in the Azure portal, follow these steps:

Open the Azure portal and go to All Services.
Go to Subscriptions and select the subscription of interest.
On the Subscriptions page, select Resource providers under Settings.
Enter sql in the filter to bring up the SQL-related extensions.
Select Register, Re-register, or Unregister for the Microsoft.Sql provider, depending on your desired action.

If you're still experiencing provisioning issues, please open a Region access request under the support topic of SQL Database and specify the DTU or vCores you want to consume on Azure SQL Database or Azure SQL Managed Instance.

I ended up just use (US) US Central.

This answer wasn't what solved it. I didn't try re-registering.
I did try to submit a Region Access Request, but the UI to get there was incredibly arcane and difficult and when I finally got there I was told that my free subscription didn't even allow me to submit it. :(
The first answer you gave, where you suggested I just use a different region, is the one that got me going.
