Hotmail Log-In 2FA and Recovery Issues. (Infuriating)

As per the title, I am trying to log into my Hotmail account. Previously I had gone passwordless, used the Authenticator app, and 2FA to log into my account due to the numerous spamming attempts to get into my account. Recently I have changed my phone where I hadn't realised that you need to re-add the accounts onto the authenticator app, no backup or memory to my phone it would appear.

Thus, when I now try to log into my hotmail.

  • It asks to confirm a number on the authenticator app. I cannot do this as the account is not on my authenticator app.
  • When selecting to send a code to my phone, the service never works and states Try another verification method That verification method isn't working right now. Please try another method.
  • Recovery code - my account is over 20 years old, I have no idea what this is and would've been to naive and young to save it at the time.
  • When trying to recover the email with my other Outlook account that is linked, Microsoft support send an automated email stating that it will be ignored due to the 2FA.
  • When using the help sites and adding my account, it can't be verified?
  • One seperate strange thing is that my iPhone mail account is still logged and I can receive/send emails.

So, I'm simply stuck and could really do without being locked out of my account forever due to historic accounts linked. I can't find a way of speaking with someone from Microsoft via an email or phone number. Can anyone help lead me in the right direction?

Dear SRB

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Q&A Community. I understand you're experiencing an infuriating issue with your Hotmail account due to two-factor authentication (2FA) and a new phone. I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and frustration this has caused.

You have correctly identified that because you had previously gone passwordless and enabled 2FA, your account's security is now completely tied to the Microsoft Authenticator app. This means that after using the Authenticator app, your account can only be verified and logged into through this app. If you did not update the login information in time after replacing your mobile phone, this problem will occur, and other recovery methods you've tried (such as the account recovery form, also known as ACSR) will not work because the account is secured with 2FA. The only way to solve this issue and recover your account is by contacting Microsoft support directly through their chat service.

Here is a clear approach to help you connect with a Microsoft support agent for real-time assistance.

I. Solution: Contacting Microsoft Chat Support

The best and only way to get real-time help and ultimately recover your account is through Microsoft's online chat support. This is the only way that can guide you through the specific steps required to regain access to a 2FA-protected account when the Authenticator app is no longer available.

Please kindly follow these steps to fix the issue:

  1. Visit the Microsoft Support Website: Navigate to the official Microsoft Support contact page: https://support.microsoft.com/contactus
  2. Describe Your Problem: In the search box, type a clear and concise description of your problem, such as "cannot sign in to Hotmail with Authenticator app" or "account recovery issue"
  3. Initiate Help: Click on "Get Help" and then select "Contact Support" at the bottom of the page.
  4. Select Product and Service: In the pop-up menu, go to the "Products & Services" tab and choose "Outlook"
  5. Choose a Category: On the "Category" tab, choose the option that best fits your problem, such as "Cannot sign in"
  6. Confirm: Click "Confirm"
  7. Connect with a Representative: The next screen will provide you with options to connect. Choose to "Chat with a support representative"

Note: The support chat team operates during certain hours. If the option to chat is unavailable, try again later or the next day. You can also leave a phone number to request a call back if that option is presented and you prefer phone support.

I hope these steps help you resolve the problem. If you require additional guidance, feel free to reply to this thread and I’ll be happy to assist you.

Warm Regards,

Alice

    Dear SRB

Thank you for your update. Thank you for your patience and coordination. I am very sorry that the problem has not been resolved.

I sincerely apologize that the Microsoft chat support team was unable to assist you. I understand how frustrating it is to be directed to Microsft Support for help only to find that it does not provide solutions to your problem .  This is a very difficult situation, and I am here to help you explore every remaining option.

The information you provided about your iPhone mail account still being logged in is helpful for me. This active session is your only way to regain full control of your account. We need to use this access point to update your security information.

Here is another workaround to see if it might help.

Step 1: Use Your iPhone to Access Security Settings

Since your mail is still working on your phone, you are technically still logged in to your Microsoft account on that device. We can use this to access the security settings directly.

    • Open a web browser on your iPhone (e.g., Safari or Chrome).
    • Navigate to the Microsoft account security page: https://account.microsoft.com/security
    • You should be prompted to sign in, but because you are already logged in to the account via your iPhone's mail app, it might automatically log you in or allow you to use that existing session. If it asks you to verify, the verification request might go to your phone, which you can now approve.
    • Once you are on the Security page, look for the "Advanced security options" section.

Step 2: Update Your Security Information

Once you are in the "Advanced security options," you can make changes that will allow you to regain full access.

    • Change Your Verification Methods:

    a. Find the section for "Ways to prove who you are."

    b. Here, you should be able to see your current phone number and the Authenticator app.

    c. Remove the old Authenticator app entry.

    d. Add a new verification method, such as your phone number, and ensure you can receive the text message. If the text message option still isn't working, try adding a different email address as a recovery method that you can access.

    e. You can also use this opportunity to set up a new instance of the Microsoft Authenticator app with a backup.

Step 3: Turn Off Two-Step Verification (Temporarily)

If you are having trouble with the verification methods, you may need to temporarily turn off two-step verification to get a new one set up.

    • On the same "Advanced security options" page, find the "Two-step verification" section.
    • Click "Turn off".
    • After turning it off, you can then set it back up with a new, fresh configuration that includes your new Authenticator app installation on your new phone.

    Acknowledging the Windows Hello Workaround

You still have a potential workaround using Windows Hello on a work computer. If you have access to a device with this feature enabled for your account, this could also be a viable path. It would allow you to bypass the broken 2FA and get into your account to fix the security settings.

    Trying Microsoft Support Again

Since your initial attempt with chat support was unsuccessful, I recommend trying to contact them a second time. Sometimes, a different agent may have a different approach or more specific tools to assist with complex account issues. When you contact them, be very clear and concise about the following:

    • You have a new phone and can no longer access the Microsoft Authenticator app.
    • The automated phone and email recovery methods are not working.
    • You still have an active session on your iPhone's mail app, which proves ownership.
    • Mention that you have tried the web-based recovery form but it was rejected due to 2FA being enabled.

This detailed information can help the agent understand the specifics of your problem and may lead to a more successful outcome.

If you still have any problems, please don’t hesitate to provide further information and I am here to help you resolve the problem.

    Warm Regards,
