I attempted to upgrade from Windows 11 Home Single Language to Windows 11 Pro

I made the payment which was processed earlier today on 8/8/2025 at 10:01:42 IST

The wizard then attempted the upgrade but failed after a long time.

I correctly or not assumed it might be because some of the older windows update updates had not been downloaded and installed and continued to do the same.

This required multiple attempts and reboots. After I completed the same now windows activation tab shows a failure

Strangely enough it shows the version as "Windows Enterprise", not sure if it is material.

But as you can see it says "We can't activate Windows on this device because ...".

Now I cannot resume the upgrade because the activation has failed.

If I attempt to troubleshoot the same using the button on the screen, I get this

My computer is an original Dell purchase a while back and I have made no hardware upgrades to the same.

Please advise on how to get the system upgraded and activated correctly.

This is a widely reported problem with the Home to Pro upgrade process, where the Enterprise edition gets installed instead of Pro, use this fix using the generic Pro key:

Important - disconnect totally from the Internet

Open the Settings App (Gear icon on your Start Menu)

Go to Update and Security - Activation

Click Change Product key

Enter this generic product key: VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T

When prompted, click 'Activate Product'

If the above does not work first time, restart your PC and try again.

Note the generic key will cause Enterprise to downgrade to the Pro edition, then your own legal licence will activate automatically after you restart (not shut down) your PC
