Code 43 for iPod on Windows 11 -- how to resolve?

Seeking audio-geek advice! My ancient iPod Shuffle with wired earphones is my preferred wearable device for listening to podcasts--for many reasons, including ability to use only one earphone while running (security), convenience of volume control and on/off with a button instead of phone; podcast subscriptions are all set up and automatically update to my iTunes Playlist to sync, etc. All worked perfectly on my old Windows 10-powered PC . . .

My laptop was stolen and with it, the original iPod connection cable that came with it. Apple no longer produces them, so replacement with an original is not possible. I sourced an alternative replacement cable, through which device is acknowledged with a ping when plugged into new laptop (Windows 11 Pro). However, connection generates a Code 43 error message. I have tried all the easy solutions suggested (reboot, turn iPod on and off, installing iTunes from Apple instead of Microsoft, etc.) but nothing solves the problem. Any other suggestions to overcome this issue? Not sure if it is Windows 11, the cable or the iPod device (but have 2 and both return same error code)--and not sure how to narrow it down. Or alternatively, suggestion for a newer compact MP3 wearable device alternative that works with iTunes on PC and has wired headphone functionality?

Hi,

Nice to meet you! I'm Randy, an Independent Advisor.

Code 43 with older iPods usually comes down to the cable, drivers, or Windows USB recognition. You can try this, First, make sure your replacement cable is a true sync+charge cable, since many third-party ones only charge and will trigger Code 43. Second, in Device Manager uninstall the iPod entry (under Portable Devices or USB controllers) and then reconnect it so Windows reinstalls the driver - also confirm that Apple Mobile Device Support is installed alongside iTunes. Third, try different USB ports and, if issues persist, reset the USB stack by uninstalling the USB Root Hubs in Device Manager and letting Windows rebuild them after restart.

Kind regards,
