Azure for Students – Cannot deploy VM due to "RequestDisallowedByAzure" region restriction

Hello, I am using an Azure for Students subscription and trying to deploy a Windows Server 2022 VM (Standard B2s size). Each time I attempt deployment, I get validation errors with:

RequestDisallowedByAzure: Resource was disallowed by Azure.

This policy maintains a set of best available regions where your subscription can deploy resources.

I have already tried multiple regions (East US, East US 2, West US) and different availability zones, but the error persists. It seems my subscription is restricted from deploying VMs in these regions.

Could you please clarify:

Which regions are allowed for Azure for Students VM deployments?

How can I enable VM creation in a supported region, or is a support request required to unlock this?

Hi Alex,

Azure for Students restricts which regions you can deploy resources to. Typically you are restricted to five different regions, and these vary for each person.

Please navigate to Azure Policy -- Authoring -- Assignments using link below:

https://portal.azure.com/#view/Microsoft_Azure_Policy/PolicyMenuBlade/~/Assignments

Look for an assignment similar to "Allowed resource deployment regions" or "Allowed locations", or something with location as part of the name. Click on this assignment, and then examine the Parameter value for list of regions.

These are the regions you are allowed to deploy resources to. Please try to create the VM in one of these regions and let me know the results.

    Hello Alex H,
    There are restrictions kept on Student subscriptions from Azure which doesn't allow you to deploy resources in all the regions rather allows you to deploy resources to few limited regions.

    Could you please share the complete error message/screenshot observed at the failure?

    [The validation failure might be having the allowed region names that is allowed to create the resource]

     

    If the error doesn't show the Allowed regions, you can follow this path to see the allowed regions:
    Azure Portal → Subscriptions → Policies → “Allowed locations”
