I get a pop-up saying 'microsoft windows operating system has stopped working'- what should I do?

Since yesterday, 14th September 2025, I have had this pop-up appear. I have closed it and nothing seems superficially affected. What do I need to do to fix this? I am not very computer savvy but I can follow clear and obvious instructions.

Thank you

Hi Matthew, sorry, I was not notified you had replied, this forum is a bit strange, please use the Comment section on my replies so I am notified when you respond.

Thank you for the screenshot, your Windows version if fully up to date, there is no problem indicated with the updates.

When you will not need to use your PC for about an hour, open the Settings App, then go to System - Recovery.

In the 'Fix problems with Windows Updates' section, click the 'Reinstall Now' button, then wait for that process to complete, this process will not affect your files, settings or installed apps.

    Screenshot (1)

Is this the correct dialogue box?

It only seems to occur a couple of minutes after start up.

    Thank you.

That error indicates a problem occurred in Windows, that can be hard to trace, but Windows will usually recover automatically from that error.

How often do you see that popup error dialog?

    2

Click your Start button, then just type winver and press Enter, please provide a screenshot of the resulting dialog box.
