How to get my existing Microsoft 365 account to recognise the pre-installed account on a new computer to reduce renewal charge?

I have an existing personal user account for Microsoft 365. I have a new computer with a personal account already loaded. I assumed that this would be recognised when signing in and that my annual charge for renewing my account would naturally be extended to take account of the preloaded account on the new machine. I did not get a passcode as the software was preloaded by Dell before delivery. My existing subscription charge is due soon, but having paid for a personal user account on the new machine, I would like this to be recognised and my subscription charge delayed / extended to take account of this . Is there a way by which this can be done?

Hi, I'm John! I will help you with this.

When you buy a new computer, many manufacturers like Dell often preload Microsoft 365, but most of the time it’s just a trial version unless you purchased the device with a full Microsoft 365 subscription included. That’s why it doesn’t automatically extend or link with your existing subscription.

To check what you actually have on the new PC:

  • Open any Office app (like Word or Excel).
  • Go to File > Account and look under Product Information, this will tell you if it’s a trial or a full subscription.
  • If it’s a trial, it won’t extend your current subscription. You’ll just continue with your existing Microsoft 365 subscription as normal.
  • If you see that a full subscription really did come with the device, you should have received a key or digital license tied to your Microsoft account. In that case, you can sign in with the same Microsoft account you use for your subscription, and it will apply automatically.

Unfortunately, two separate subscriptions don’t merge or “add up” in terms of time. The best option is to redeem the new one (if it’s a full subscription), and then turn off auto-renew on your current one so you aren’t billed twice.

You can also double-check this by signing in to your Microsoft account at https://account.microsoft.com/services Under Services & subscriptions, you’ll see all active Microsoft 365 plans tied to your account, along with their renewal dates.

Can I ask, did Dell confirm that your purchase included a full Microsoft 365 subscription, or was it just the standard preloaded trial?

The subscription offered by Dell as part of the purchase of your new PC is likely to use a different account and it is therefore separate from the one you purchased previously. Different accounts can't be added together.
