How can I fix a key that is not always responding when I touch it on my surface laptop, i.e., I often have to press it several times before it works?

Geoff,

Problems with a single key (I've seen this myself) usually are not software or firmware. It could be something (dust, etc.) stuck under the key or a mechanical problem with the key.

You did not state which Surface Laptop model you have. If it is under warranty, Microsoft should replace the keyboard under warranty. If not under warranty, Microsoft does sell complete replacement keyboards for most of these Laptops (if you provide info on your exact model, I can provide a link)

                     OR

If not under warranty, before spending more money on the entire replacement keyboard, you might want to try a replacement key from someone like:

Hello Geoff,

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Community! Could you please let me know which model/version of your Surface you have? Have you attempted to update your Surface or any drivers? Additionally, have you tried using the Surface diagnostic tool? You can find it here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/fix-common-problems-using-the-surface-app-and-surface-diagnostic-toolkit-f61d8d18-37a9-863d-f8d0-1982eb16f7b5

You can also download drivers and firmware for your Surface from this link: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/download-drivers-and-firmware-for-surface-09bb2e09-2a4b-cb69-0951-078a7739e120

If it turns out to be a hardware issue and none of the above solutions work, the key mechanism may be worn out or damaged. In that case, please reach out to Microsoft Support at https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/contactus if your device is still under warranty, or visit a certified repair center for inspection or key replacement.
